Loris is a city located in Horry County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,079.

Loris is located at 34°3'32" North, 78°53'28" West (34.058760, -78.891058)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.32% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 2,079 people, 819 households, and 546 families residing in the city. The population density was 258.1/km² (668.2/mi²). There were 922 housing units at an average density of 114.5/km² (296.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 56.66% White, 40.45% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.30% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 2.69% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 819 households out of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 21.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,250, and the median income for a family was $33,036. Males had a median income of $25,750 versus $17,180 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,779. 28.8% of the population and 22.7% of families were below the poverty line. 44.7% of those under the age of 18 and 20.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Dining and Festivals

Loris holds the annual Loris Bog-off on the second weekend in October. Outside of Loris are the Horry County Fairgrounds, on highway 701. It bring rides, concessions, performers, and animals to the area, along with a recently-added dirtbike racing track.

In the area there are several restaurants. The five fast-food restaurants in town are KFC, Hardee's, Subway, and McDonalds all on 701. The other is Tastee Freeze on Main St. (US Hwy 9) headed towards North Myrtle Beach.

Other restaurants in town include locally-owned Fowler's Grill, Shorty's Grill, American Hero, and Santino's Pizza.
