Microsoft FrontPage
Microsoft FrontPage (nome completo Microsoft Office FrontPage) è stato un editor HTML del tipo WYSIWYG prodotto dalla Microsoft Corporation per la linea di sistemi Windows. È stato parte della linea di prodotti Microsoft Office fino al 2003. Da quell'anno, FrontPage fu rimpiazzato da Microsoft Expression Web e Microsoft SharePoint Designer, rilasciati il dicembre 2006 con Microsoft Office 2007.

Storia
FrontPage fu creato dalla compagnia Cambridge, Massachusetts Vermeer Technologies, Incorporated,[1] (evidenza: è possibile trovare la stringa _lti_ nelle cartelle e nei file di un sito FrontPage). La compagnia fu acquistata dalla Microsoft nel 1996 per poter aggiungere il software alla linea di prodotti Office, permettendo l'aumento di vantaggio nella guerra dei browser, poiché FrontPage era stato progettato per essere accompagnato con Internet Explorer.
Essendo un editor WYSIWYG, FrontPage è progettato per nascondere il codice HTML, permettendo ai principianti di progettare siti Web con facilità.
La prima evidenza che FrontPage ebbe il nome della Microsoft fu con il rilascio di Windows NT 4.0 Server e il suo Web server costituente Internet Information Services 2.0. Incluso nel CD di NT 4.0, FrontPage 1.1 funzionava su NT 4.0 (Server o Workstation) o Windows 95. Fino a FrontPage 98, il programma era diviso in due: FrontPage Editor, usato per modificare le pagine web, e FrontPage Explorer, usato per navigare tra le cartelle del sito.[2] Con FrontPage 2000, i due programmi furono fusi in un'unico programma.
FrontPage in origine necessitava di plugin per il server, chiamati IIS Extensionss. L'estensione impostata fu rinnovata per l'inclusione nella lina di prodotti Office con Office 97, poi rinominata FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE). Both sets of extensions needed to be installed on the target Web server for its content and publishing features to work. Microsoft offered both Windows and Unix-based versions of FPSE. FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions worked with earlier versions of FrontPage as well. FPSE 2002 was the last released version which also works with FrontPage 2003 and was later updated for IIS 6.0 as well. However, with FrontPage 2003, Microsoft began moving away from proprietary Server Extensions to standard protocols like FTP and WebDAV for remote Web publishing and authoring.[3] FrontPage 2003 can also be used with Windows SharePoint Services.
A version for Mac OS was released in 1998; however, it had fewer features than the Windows product and Microsoft has never updated it.[4]
In 2006, Microsoft announced that FrontPage would eventually be superseded by two products.[5] Microsoft SharePoint Designer would allow business professionals to design SharePoint-based applications. Microsoft Expression Web is targeted at the Web design professional for the creation of feature-rich Web sites. Microsoft discontinued Microsoft FrontPage in December 2006.
