Three/four counties points

Footballers and footballers

Okay, this is getting silly:

Images with /ad/ in their URL

These images are stored on the image server in the "/ad/" directory, and as such may trip some oversensitive adblockers. Moving these images to a different filename is the only way of moving them out of this directory, and should be considered for featured pictures, images on the Main Page, and images on featured articles. Beyond that it's the user's own lookout if they have crap adblocking software ;)

The technical bit: The "/ad/" part of the URL is derived from the first two characters of a hex string, which is a hash of the uploaded filename, so 1 in every 256 images will be in this folder. Deleting and/or re-uploading the image with the exact same filename will therefore use the exact same URL, so to get around the problem a different filename must be used. Due to the nature of hashing algorithms, any minor change to the filename should work, even just changing case.

The image handling parts of MediaWiki are apparently undergoing redevelopment, which is likely to mean the whole naming system will be changed at some point in the future, and this whole problem will go away (don't quote me on this).
