Ryugenzawa is an ancient forest in which the legendary eight-headed serpant Orochi was sealed in the center of the forest's lake centuries ago, Orochi posseses a magical healing moss on its back that caused the forest's lake to gain mistycal properties, such as making animals grow twice their seize and healing all injuries, of course the effects only last as long as one drinks it.

Shinnosuke and his Grandfather both live in the forest of Ryugenzawa. Here they protect the local villagers from the giant animals that they once kept as pets. Many years ago, Shinnosuke's Grandfather was in charge of a small petting zoo in Ryugenzawa, and when the animals escaped they grew to monsterous sizes due to the Water of Life found in the forest, now Shinnosuke and his grandfather have taken on the task of keeping the huge animals away from civilization, while at the same time caring for them.

Shinnosuke now depends on the Water of Life to cure the deep gashes that plague his life. Without frequent exposure to the Water of Life Shinnosuke will die.
