"The Going Price For Home"
This song is about Arthur McCloud coming home to molest his daughter Cecilia. Cecilia knows her father is on the way home and is trying to find a way to leave.
"The Fight of Moses Early & Sir Arthur McCloud"
Cecilia pleads with her lover Johnny Early to run away with her. He chooses not to go because he mother does not want him to. "Oh Mother please, they have no need for your boy" Cecilia tells Johnny that she has been "bitten by disease" and that she is very hurt and that if Johnny does not go with her she "might fall apart"
"Our Darling Daughter You Are, Little Cecilia Marie"
Arthur has returned home, and so have the horrific acts he performs on his daughter. Cecilia contemplates murdering her father but is afraid to. "You couldn't race a knife across him" She considers asking someone else to kill her father so she won't feel responsible. Instead of murder, she begs her mother, Martha, to leave Arthur. She refuses so Cecila gives in and shoots Arthur McCloud while he is in the shower. "I'll do it myself so it's done" While she is burying her father, the Bleam brothers are secrectly watching her "Out from the woods, a light burns in shadow, unnoticed to a girl with a gun"
"A Death In The Family"
After Cecilia murders her father, she runs away with her two brothers, who are twins and unnamed in the story. She leaves a note wishing her mother the best and promises to return. Her mother is heard at the end longing for the day when she gets to hold and see her children again.
"The Margretville Dance"
This is the introduction of the Bleam family. The mother of the family, who is an insane meth addict tells her two sons, Long-Arm and Butchie that they have been chosen by God to collect souls. In order to get the souls out of the bodies they claim, they create a device called the Blood Machine, which dismembers the bodies. This was mentioned by Claudio in several interviews, but it does not seem like this is explained in the album. At the beginning of the song, the father catches the mother stealing from his stash, and kills her. While the mother is dying she tells the father that Long-Arm and Butchie will find out and kill him for what he has done "Here they come to rock your body"
"Accidents"
The father of Long-Arm and Butchie, Gunner Recall, panics and tries to blame the murder on his sons. He has a preacher come and see the body and tells him he thinks his sons commited the murder. "Come Preacher where this flesh begins to spoil, You know I think these young are spent and have seen their day" Long-Arm either has come home unnoticed by Gunner Recall, and has seen his dead mother, or he actually witnessed the murder. He runs and finds Butchie and tells him that their mother is dead, Butchie does not want to believe him. "Long-Arm you liar! Go run home to Mama!"
"Run, Gunner Recall, Run! The Town Wants You Dead!"
Gunner Recall fears his sons are coming for him and starts to go insane. "Look out I fear, They follow near" He contemplates telling the truth about the murder. "Tell them all the truth, for no secret lies this time" During his trial, he is sentenced to death by hanging "In the courthouse Judge Kevin sentenced rope to neck" He tries to blame the murder on insanity but is unsuccesful "They don't hear the serpent that burns your ear, So Baby look out!" He somehow manages to escape during the trial and runs and hides in the woods. While his sons are searching for him they see Cecilia murdering and burying her father. They hear her speaking to him "Cause I'm so sorry for you, you'll never love again" Cecilia's voice is symbolized by Claudio singing in a much higher range than in the rest of the song.
"Who Watches The Watchmen?"
Long Arm and Butchie kidnap Cecilia and one of her brothers, and kill them with the Blood Machine. They feel it is their duty to kill Cecilia due to the fact that she murdered her father. "Through this door you deserve a beating from the Machine" The Brothers tell Cecilia that they saw what she did, and that her life now belongs to them. "What you once that was yours is ours now"
"Wayne Andrews, The Old Bee Keeper"
Not many clues have been given about this song. A possible explanation could be that Wayne Andrews is the "coward that sits" in Gunner Recall's head. Gunner is hiding in this song and is starting to give up, knowing that his sons will come to kill him soon, "I'm the keeper of the bees, I'm a dead man" He writes in his diary that he won't think of his dead wife anymore."Dear Diary, I won't keep her awake anymore" He seems to regret killing her because he loved her. "I won't love her anymore, she won't let me"
"The Missing McCloud Boys"
Martha McCloud has found her dead son and daughter buried in the snow and is asking God why. She is pleading with Him to judge the Bleam Brothers "Let them be judged upon, for what they've done to him, my son, in the snow before the sun" She feels that her sons could not understand what they saw and what was done, and is probably convinced that both sons are dead. "If they could only say all the things they saw would they, they were only boys"
"Easter"
Martha is mourning her children. She doesn't want to go outside where they once played because it would bring back painful memories. "Sandbox drifting, in the land outside, you're missing" She is constantly searching for her missing son "Bus ride, looking for the face that I've been missing" She feels guilty for not leaving Arthur, because Cecilia, who was possibly 17, would have stayed with her if Arthur were gone. "Seventeen, looking for a day I long again"
"78"
We go back to the Bleam brothers, who have now lost all sanity, as they frantically look for their father. Gunner has also slipped through a downward spiral toward insanity. He hears his wife's voice telling him his sons are coming to kill him "Here they come my dear!" His sons are taunting him saying "Haven't you heard from the herd you have mingled with? Help will not come to you" He knows his time has run out and decides to give in and let his sons murder him. "When the worst comes knocking, you better stand clear"
