MSG Sportsnet

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Takuma Ishizeki (talk | contribs) at 23:56, 23 December 2006 (Added several FSN New York in (any area) sections, corrected FSN New York in Central New York section). FSN New York, previously known as Sports Channel New York and FOX Sports Net New York, is a regional sports network in New York, northern New Jersey (north of ZIP codes 081XX, 082XX, and 083XX), southwestern Connecticut (areas with ZIP codes 064XX, 065XX, 066XX, 067XX, 068XX, and 069XX), and northeastern Pennsylvania (areas with ZIP codes 177XX, 178XX, 179XX, 182XX, 183XX, 184XX, 185XX, 186XX, 187XX, and 188XX). This coverage is based on DirecTV, as other providers/markets in these areas may or may not carry it. FSN New York is owned by Cablevision, co-owned with MSG Network as MSG Media, and operated by FOX Broadcasting Company (News Corporation). FSN New York is home of New York Islanders (NHL) and New Jersey Devils (NHL), and its sister network, MSG Network, is home of New York Knicks (NBA), New York Rangers (NHL), New York Liberty (WNBA), Red Bull New York (MLS), and Buffalo Sabres (NHL). FSN New York also serves an overflow purpose when multiple local teams that would be shown on MSG Network play at the same time, much like MSG Network does for FSN New York, providing one of its teams that does not play at the same time. Like MSG Network, FSN New York also has 8 broadcasting zones.

FSN New York 2 and MSG2

Like MSG Network's MSG2, FSN New York also has FSN New York 2. These networks will air only when 3 or 4 local games air on FSN New York and MSG Network combined. Only New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils games are eligible to FSN New York 2 (New York Knicks and New York Rangers have higher rating to MSG Network, thus these teams' games are games that are eligible to MSG2, and never on FSN New York 2). For cable, these networks air mostly (always for MSG2) on the channel guide as the "over-the-air" telecast. For satellite, these will air on the alternate channel as the "over-the-air" telecast. Cablevision recently added iO Sports 2 on its digital cable boxes for use on FSN New York 2 and MSG2 in digital quality. When FSN New York 2 and MSG2 air both at the same time, FSN New York 2 will air on the alternate channel. On 2006-2007 season, there are 2 days when FSN New York 2 and MSG2 air at the same time.

Despite the fact that the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders are all playing at the same time, the New York Rangers telecast on Saturday, December 16, 2006 had moved from MSG2 to FSN New York, resulting the New York Islanders telecast to move from FSN New York to FSN New York 2. Also, despite the fact that New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and New Jersey Devils are all playing at the same time, New York Rangers telecast on Saturday, December 23, 2006 had moved from MSG2 to FSN New York (, again), resulting New Jersey Devils telecast to move from FSN New York to MSG2. The main reason for these events are unknown at this time.

From 1998-1999 season to 2004-2005 season, Cablevision chose not to air FSN New York 2 and MSG2, and placed the games on their MSG Metro channels, which was only available in limited homes. Sometimes, games were also placed on WLNY. During this era, when two of the teams that the MSG Networks covered played against each other, only one broadcast would usually be produced using one of the team's announcing teams (this was either due to MSG Network's TV contracts, or a desire to show a different sporting event at the same time). Beginning from 2005-2006 season, when Metro (formerly MSG Metro) being discontinued and lost New Jersey Nets telecasts to YES Network, FSN New York and MSG Network resumed airing FSN New York 2 and MSG2, and now produce two broadcasts when two of their teams are playing against each other.

Arena Football League Coverage

FSN New York airs some New York Dragons games as the AFL on FSN package. Because the AFL on FSN is a local-only telecast, only New York Dragons games are eligible to air on FSN New York. Other Arena Football League teams' games are blacked out on FSN New York. Some New York Dragons games will air on SNY when not airing on FSN or Versus.

Collegiate Programming

FSN New York also airs college games. However, games involving New York City and its suburban areas are blacked out outside these areas. Time Warner Cable, among others, often acquires rights to these games in order to put them on its own channels in their markets. National telecast games (within FSN New York), however, will air all FSN New York zones.

New York Rangers and Red Bull New York on FSN New York

New York Rangers and Red Bull New York games are mainly aired on MSG Network, but they air on FSN New York when New York Knicks (for New York Rangers) or New York Liberty (for Red Bull New York) air on MSG Network and there are no other local teams that air mainly on FSN New York air on FSN New York. New York Knicks and New York Liberty have higher rating to MSG Network than New York Rangers and Red Bull New York, respectively, thus they will never air as FSN New York telecast (in the future, they could air on FSN New York).

The same goes to MSG Network, that either New York Islanders or New Jersey Devils (teams that mainly air on FSN New York), air on MSG Network when these teams play at the same time and when no other local teams that mainly air on MSG Network air on MSG Network.

As described in FSN New York 2 and MSG2 section, the New York Rangers telecast on Saturday, December 16, 2006 and Saturday, December 23, 2006 had moved from MSG2 to FSN New York, resulting the New York Islanders telecast to move from FSN New York to FSN New York 2 and New Jersey Devils telecast to move to MSG2, respectively. These are the rare events, because when the New York Rangers have a conflict to both New York Knicks and both/either New York Islanders and/or New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers telecast usually airs on MSG2 (sometimes MSG when New York Knicks are playing on the road and start 1 hour or later than New York Rangers). Because of MSG Network's decision, these "respotments" were made.

Differences between FSN New York and other FSN stations

FSN New York is the only FSN station that does not animate most animations that the other FSN stations do, although FSN New York still uses the same FSN scorebar (not during the Red Bull New York games, when FSN New York always uses the "temporary style" scorebar), same music, and same information box (player stats, player's informations, commercials within FSN New York and MSG Network, etc.) as other FSN stations have. However, FSN New York does animate the intro animations, power play popups (without sounds), circular-squaring on the scorebar's team name during the power play, fade of the color of the scorebar's team name, FSN scoreboard (appears before and after the commercial break) (classics only without the phrase FOXSPORTS.COM ON MSN, and different animations depending which team's telecast FSN New York is airing), the enter and exit of the instant replay (different from other FSN stations during the Red Bull New York games), the scorebar's popup stats (power play stats, penalty informations, penalty kill stats, etc.) and commercials (within FSN New York and MSG Network) (different from other FSN stations, and different animations depending on which team's telecast FSN New York is airing), and the sponsors of the game. FSN New York also vanishes the scorebar when the play is stopped, when the camera is at the closer view of a player, when camera is viewing at the goal area, during the penalty shot/kick, and during the shootout. Also, like FSN New England, FSN New York still uses the classic "scores around the nation" board shown eventually at the bottom of the screen.

Hoosick area was formerly the only market on Time Warner Cable of Albany (within New York) which did not carry FSN New York. Hoosick area was also formerly provided by Adelphia. It formerly carried FSN New England, but because of FSN's rule, it was replaced by FSN New York.

FSN New York HD & MSG HD

FSN New York also has the high-definition feed named FSN New York HD, available only on cable televisions. However, FSN New York 2 does not have an HD feed, thus FSN New York 2's games will not broadcast in high definition. All of the home games for New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, and Red Bull New York and select road games for these teams airing on FSN New York are HD-Available.

The same goes to MSG Network, that MSG Network (but not MSG2) also have HD feed (cable television only) named MSG HD, and all home games (and select road games) for New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New York Liberty, Red Bull New York, New York Islanders, and New Jersey Devils airing on MSG Network are HD-Available (Buffalo Sabres games currently does not have HD telecasts).
