Universal synchronous and asynchronous receiver-transmitter

A Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (USART) is a type of a serial interface device that can be programmed to communicate asynchronously or synchronously. See UART for a definition of the asynchronous capability of this device.
