Mission Statement
"Campbell High School's mission is to join together with parents, students, staff and community to become a collaboration of learners born of character, courage, respect and responsibility."
Competencies
Campbell High School is one of the few high schools in the state to use competencies. Competencies are sections of a class that has an individual grade compared to having an overall grade. For example, In French the competencies are Communications, Culture, Comprehension, and Grammar and Vocabulary. Competencies are used to see if a student understands the main points in a class. In a class, a student may have a high average, such as a B, but his or her grade will say “F” on file because they have less than 60 in one competencies. Among students, there is a debate about competencies. Some classes chose main skills, such as analysis, vocabulary, or grammar for competencies, which have grades throughout the year, while other classes while have units, like the Legislative branch, the Executive branch, the judicial branch, and comparative government instead. Having a unit as a competency causes problems when a student fails one because no more grades will be added and the grade cannot be changed. The student will then fail the class no matter what. There is little chance that competencies will be removed from the school curriculum because the state of New Hampshire will eventually have all high schools turn to competencies for grading.
Block Scheduling
Campbell High School has eight class blocks in a semester, or four a day. On day one, students have A.B, C and D blocks. On day twos they have E, F, G and H blocks. The first day of school is a day one, the second day a day two, the third a day one, and so on. If a day is cancelled for any reason,. Like a snow day, the block scheduling still continues, causing two school days to have the same schedule in a row.
Final Exams
When Campbell High School first opened, there were no finals. When students learned that local high school Alvirne High gets a half day for finals, the students brought up the idea to the teachers, and later the school board. Students now have finals on the last four days of a semester. The first day is A and B, the second C and D, the third E and F, while the last day is G and H. If a student has a study, they do not have to show up for the block on that day of a final. As of 2007, if you have an A in a class, Juniors and Seniors do not have to take a final in that class.
Advisory
Students have a ten minute advisory block every day, except Wednesday when they have a twenty-two minute advisory. Advisory takes place in the middle of the day, between the second and the third block of the day. It is used as a “homeroom”. The student has the same advisor in the same room for all years he or she is in school. The advisor helps with Sophomore and Senior projects.
Sophomore Project
The sophomore project is a minimum of thirty hours of community service and a presentation on how you helped others. The sophomore project is a requirement for graduation.
Senior Project
The senior project is a minimum of forty hours of work in which the student chooses to help oneself. It is a requirement for graduation.
