Rituparna Sengupta is a leading Bengali actress, who works mainly in the Calcutta film industry. Born and raised in Calcutta, she studied history at Lady Brabourne College and Calcutta University. She made her film debut in 1992. She has received widespread critical acclaim for her performances in Dahan (1997), Utsab (2000), Paromitar Ek Din (2000) and Mondo Meyer Upakhyan (2002). She won the Best Actress award at the 1998 Indian National Film Awards for her role in Rituparno Ghosh's Dahan. She plays Romita, a newly-wed woman who is the victim of a brutal rape.

Rituparna is a trained Odissi dancer, and has her own classical dance troupe 'Bhabna Aaj O Kaal'. ('Contemporary Thoughts'}. She is married to Sanjay Chakrabarty, an IT entrepreneur and her childhood sweetheart.
