Sudan Project
This is sort of turning into a checklist for topics related to Sudan, a country which has been in the news a lot lately, mostly because of the Darfur conflict. (Maybe it should be turned into a category?) This page will contain a list of topics which need pages, and pages that need improvement.
- For a good project-page skeleton, see Template:WikiProject.
A fair number of these topics will probably be controversial, given the present conflict in Darfur, so we'll have to work together to verify that everything is NPOV.
Ethnic groups
Current or Recent Political figures
- Omar al-Bashir -- president
- Hasan al-Turabi
- Ali Uthman Taha -- vice president; said to be very influential
- various rebel leaders
- Sadeq al-Mahdi -- descendent of Muhammad_ibn_Abdalla, see below
- John Garang -- SPLA head
Current Political parties
- Sadeq al-Mahdi's Umma party
- Mohammed Osman al-Mirghani's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) (needs disambiguation from Irish party of same name)
Beshir's ruling Sudanese National Congress. (Seems to be called just "National Congress" in most articles. Should that article be at National Congress (Sudan) or something?I have created a stub at National Congress (Sudan) and made multiple redirects that should ensure that people eventually end up there. - BanyanTree 00:08, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Religious Groups
- The Mahdiya, which has strong support in Darfur,
- The Khatemya, which is closer to Egypt and has its grassroots support in the north.

A Note On Transliteration
I've got some data culled from Google on various transliterations of terms related to Sudan. It seems as good a way as any to try to settle on a standard transliteration. For example, here are some data for Janjaweed:
- Janjaweit 23
- Jangawid 41
- Janjuweed 65
- Jingaweit 404
- Janjawid 7210
- Janjaweed 18000
So in this case Janjaweed is certainly the best transliteration. I'll post more of these in respective articles. Perhaps we could look into an Article on tips on consistently transliterating Arabic?
