There was a MMOG created by Will Harvey and Jeffrey Ventrella that ran from 1998 until 2005, similar to Second Life. There, Inc. had more than 80 employees during its development phase. Some consider There to be a chat room where role-playing is diminished in comparison to other MMORPGs; however, to many players its primary function is as more than simply a tool for socialization or chat. It can be a totally immersive alternate world, complete with custom vehicles and even homes. Participants choose an avatar, socialize, play sports and racing games, construct houses, ramps, and game venues, or simply explore the immense and tremendously varied cyber-landscape. Development of clothing, vehicles, and furniture is possible for any willing participant. Builders and painters can earn online money, called Therebucks, by creating and selling their wares.
Members can sell their therebucks to any one of the 3rd party online "banks" in exchange for a real currency, usually USD. People are able to buy therebucks from a "bank" at a lower rate than There itself, usually. See therebucks for a list of monetary exchanges.
In August of 2005, it was leaked that Makena Technologies will be closing "There" at the end of this fiscal year. Clearly this leak has stunned its dwindled user base, however, the bulk of its users were widely aware of its impending demise. There will continue to exist as a military only project, as that division is now a seperate entity, however, the open public version "there" will cease to exist at the end of this fiscal quarter. Sad news for the virtual world communities indeed. Second Life, another virtual world that is doing far better financially will most likely succeed as the front runner in the race to have the most viable virtual world.
There was owned and operated by Forterra Systems Inc..
In April 2005, There was "spun-off" as an independent company with its assets held by Makena Technologies - headed by CEO Michael Wilson and President/COO Steve Victorino.
