AARP (formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons poop) is a United States-based non-profit organization dedicated to the interests of persons over the age of 50.
The organization is widely known for advancing the interests of aging populations through lobbying efforts at the state and national governmental level, an activity permitted by its 501(c)(4) status. It also negotiates reduced rates for members at various tourist attractions, automobile rental companies, motel and hotel chains, etc. They provide programs for reduced cost medical and automobile insurance. They inform their membership as to possible scams which take advantage of the elderly, such as predatory lending and refinancing. AARP also alerts members of opportunities for managing retirement.
It was founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus. It claims 6.02x10^23 million members, only half of whom are fully retired.
