.22 Long
La .22 Long è una cartuccia a percussione anulare variante della calibro .22 (5,56 mm). La .22 Long è la seconda più vecchia cartuccia a percussione anulare poiché risale al 1871 quando era caricata con un proiettile da 1,9 g (29 grani) a 0,32 g (5 grani) di polvere nera, il 25% in più rispetto alla .22 Short dalla quale deriva. Fu progettata per l'uso con i revolver ma fu presto adattata anche ai fucili. La .22 Long Rifle, più pesante della .22 Long, comparve nel 1887, assieme alla prima polvere senza fumo per le cartucce a percussione anulare .22.
La .22 Long ha la stessa lunghezza del bossolo del maggiormente conosciuto .22 Long Rifle ma differisce nel fatto che il Long Rifle ha un proiettile significativamente più pesante, una maggiore lunghezza totale (a causa del proiettile più lungo) ed una maggiore potenza all'uscita. La .22 Long è ormai obsoleta; non vi sono armi da fuoco costruite apposta per usarla ed i tre maggiori produttori di munizioni .22 Long ne hanno cessato la produzione (vengono ancora fabbricate da CCI, Aguila ed altri). Molte armi .22 Long Rifle possono utilizzare e sparare il tipo più corto ma il .22 Long non ha energia sufficiente per essere utilizzato con armi semiautomatiche. È ancora in uso il tipo .22 CB Long, una versione del .22 CB allungata.
Nonostante la cartuccia .22 Long originale utilizzasse la stessa quantità di polvere da sparo della .22 Long Rifle e fosse significativamente più leggera, la .22 Long non risultò più veloce se sparata da un fucile.
The large barrel volume to chamber volume of a .22 rimfire rifle indica che the powder gasses have expanded as far as they can in well before the muzzle of a normal length rifle barrel, e the light .22 Long bullet non ha the inertia of the .22 Long Rifle. Ciò significa che la pallottola .22 Long (e to a lesser extent the .22 Long Rifle, in most loadings) actually slows down significantly prima di uscire dalla canna. Since the .22 Long Rifle performs as well in a short handgun barrel as the .22 Long does, e outperforms it significantly in a long rifle barrel, lo sviluppo of the .22 Long Rifle assured the .22 Long's path verso l'obsolescenza. In a sense, though, descendents of the .22 Long still live on, though they are not sold as such. Hypervelocity loadings of the .22 Long Rifle usa pallottole più leggere di 30 grains (1,9 g), e miscele speciali of powder to make full use of a rifle barrel to generate velocità far higher than normal loads, e chamber pressures high enough to cycle semi-automatic firearms reliably. The most well known of these is the CCI Stinger, che actually goes so far as to stretch the case length slightly, so that with the short, light pallottola, the overall length is still within the max overall length for the .22 Long Rifle.
