Half Baked è un film comico del 1998 con Dave Chappelle, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams e Guillermo Díaz, diretto da Tamra Davis e scritto da Dave Chappelle e Neal Brennan.
Nel film compaiono numerose celebri comparse come Steven Wright, Tommy Chong, Janeane Garofalo, Willie Nelson, Tracy Morgan, Snoop Dogg, Jon Stewart, Stephen Baldwin e Bob Saget.
Trama
Thurgood (Chapelle), Brian (Breuer) e Scarface (Diaz) a seguito dell'arresto del loro amico e coinquilino Kenny (Williams), accusato di aver ucciso del cavallo della polizia Ranuncolo, sono costretti a spacciare marijuana per poter pagare il riscatto di 100.000 dollaro.
Allestiscono una società di spaccio, il Bravo Ragazzo, vendendo la marijuana che Thurgood rimedia sul posto di lavoro, un'industria farmaceutica che conduce ricerche di laboratorio per il governo e le grandi società e che, di conseguenza, lavora anche con la droga.
La loro attività diventa molto popolare, tanto da rimediare tra i propri clienti anche persone molto famose; tuttavia le circostanze per il gruppo si dimostrano avverse. Innanzi tutto nella vita privata i tre cominciano ad avere problemi, primo tra tutti Thurgood, che si è fidanzato con una ragazza contraria a qualsiasi tipo di droga e ad ogni forma di suo consumo, ironicamente chiamata Mary Jane[1]. Il problema più grande, però, è l'inimicizia che il gruppo si crea con lo spacciatore Samson Simpson, a cui sta sottraendo sempre più clienti. Simpson li oblliga a pagare 20.000 $ a settimana, minacciandoli di morte e i tre, disperati, ricorrono all'aiuto della polizia, concordando il rilascio di Kenny nel caso in cui fossero riusciti a consegnare loro il potente spacciatore. Dopo una serie di avvenimenti controversi e bizzarri il trio riesce nel suo intento: Kenny viene liberato e Thurgood rinuncia alla droga per la sua amata Mary Jane.
Produzione
Gran parte di Half Baked è stata girata a Toronto, in Canada.
In un'intervista del 2006 nel programma televisivo americano Inside the Actors Studio Chapelle ha affermato che la sceneggiatura usata per produrre il film era diversa da quella da lui scritta, che, a suo parere, lo rendeva un film adatto ad un pubblico adulto e non "un film sull'erba per ragazzi"[2].
Incassi
Il film è stato proiettato per la prima volta nei cinema statunitensi il 16 gennaio 1998[3] incassando 7.722.540$ nel weekend d'apertura[3] e guadagnando un totale di 17.460.020$[3].
DVD features
In an alternate ending available on the "Fully Baked Edition" DVD release as a deleted scene, it is revealed that after Kenny returns home from jail, all of the roommates sit down to smoke from "Billy Bong Thornton," an act that was thwarted earlier in the movie due to Kenny still being in jail. This scene implies that it is Thurgood's last time smoking.
The next scene is an extended version of the theatrical ending, in which Thurgood meets Mary Jane on the bridge, and after a short talk with his "joint" he throws it over the side of the bridge, then walks off with Mary Jane. In this version, he has a longer talk with his "joint," throws it off the side of the bridge, and slowly walks away with Mary Jane until they almost disappear on the horizon, but then Thurgood comes running back yelling, "Hold on, weed, I'm coming!" as he hops over the side of the bridge at the spot where he threw the joint over.
In the same alternate ending, it is revealed that Jan may not really be "a big dyke" as she is caught on the couch with Steven Wright's "guy on the couch" character, when Kenny and the roommates return home from bailing Kenny out of jail.
The "Fully Baked Edition" includes a segment called "Five Minutes with the Guy on the Couch." The five minute clip depicts a stationary camera filming a man who resembles Steven Wright, as he sleeps on the couch. As clouds of smoke waft in and out of the scene, he turns over several times, farts, scratches his head, removes his socks, and at the end of the scene, he rolls over and falls off of the couch. This feature is reminiscent of the Yule Log, in which a stationary camera films a burning log in a fireplace which is intended for people who do not have a fireplace.
