Sigur Rós (which translates as "victory rose") is an Icelandic post-rock band, formed in Reykjavik in 1994, while the band's members were teenagers. Jon Þor Birgisson (Jónsi - guitarist/vocalist), Georg Holm (Goggi - bass guitar) and Agust (drums) won a record deal with Bad Taste, a local label, and released Von ("Hope") in 1997, followed very quickly by a remix collection, Von Brigði. The band hired Kjartan Sveinsson (Kjarri - keyboard) for Ágætis Byrjun (1999; "good start") to critical acclaim and some popular fanfare, mostly in the United Kingdom. By the end of 2000, Sigur Rós' popularity had grown and the band was playing with Radiohead and other big names. In 2002, the band released ( ).
