The Sturgis Charter Public School is a charter school located in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Sturgis was chartered in February 1998 as "Sturgis Charter School". The school opened in September 1998 with 162 freshman, 15 faculty and staff, a newly renovated facility, and a $1.2million budget. Sturgis currently has approximately 350 students and 40 faculty and staff.
The original charter, as approved by the Massachusetts Board of Education (chaired by former BU President John Silber), required ALL Sturgis students to sit for six subject-area exams and meet the other criteria of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Subsequent amendments have eliminated this requirement, however, all students in the junior and senior year have IB courses as their ONLY option.
Sturgis overcame 6 years of poor governance and administration, and was accepted as an IB school in 2005. Since then, the school has elected a new board of trustees, hired a new administration team, and has replaced all of the original staff.
Sturgis' first class of IB diploma candidates will graduate in June 2006. Sturgis expects to award 10 to 15 full IB diplomas in 2006. The class of 2005 was not eligible for the full IB diploma, although most of the class attempted at least two of the six possible exams, and Sturgis students found a great deal of success, especially in History and English.
The class of 2007 will represent the second class with the opportunity to earn a full IB diploma. The school expects approximately 25 to 30 students from the class of 2007 to earn the full IB diploma. Sturgis expanded its course offerings dramatically from fall 2004 to fall 2005, and will offer still more IB courses beginning in fall 2006.
School clubs include Mock Trial, a ski club, and a Model United Nations. There is also an award-winning Chess Team.
Sports at Sturgis include: Boys and Girls soccer, Field Hockey, Cross Country, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Tennis, Lacrosse, Golf, and Baseball.
Sturgis continues to face criticism from people with no knowledge of the school, its course of study, or the abilities, education, or talents of its staff. Inaccurate, poorly written Wikipedia entries are typical of the type of silly criticism the school regularly faces. Please feel free to visit Sturgis the next time you find yourself in Hyannis, and judge for yourself.
