Martin Droeshout

Martin Droeshout [/ˈdruːʃaʊt/] (aprile 1601 – 1650) è stato un incisore inglese di origini fiamminghe, famoso per aver realizzato il ritratto di William Shakespeare per l'edizione del First Folio del 1623, edito da John Heminges ed Henry Condell, colleghi attori de "Il Bardo".

Shakespeare

Droeshout avrebbe voluto che la sua carriera iniziasse da incisore quando gli venne commissionata la produzione del ritratto di Shakespeare. Nondimeno è stato ipotizzato che suo zio, chiamato anche Martin Droeshout (1560s – c.1642), potrebbe esserne stato l' artista, e che i due furono in seguito confusi. Mary Edmund suppone nell' Oxford Dictionary of National Biography che fu il più anziano dei due a creare l' opera.^[1] Una ricerche più recente di June Schlueter riafferma l'attribuzione tradizionale al giovane Droeshout.^[2]

He also created more ambitious allegorical, mythical and satirical designs. These included an illustration of the suicide of Dido.^[3]

Move to Spain

Some time between 1632 (his last known signed and dated English print) and 1635 (his first known signed and dated Spanish print), Martin Droeshout moved to Madrid and anglicised his name to "Droeswood" ("hout" being Dutch for "wood").^[4]
