Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 67.72.98.88 (talk) at 20:31, 5 June 2006 (Current requests). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.
Simple username changes

This page hosts simple requests for a username change across the Wikimedia network. Requests are processed by stewards and global renamers.

Instructions
  1. Read Wikipedia:Changing username carefully. You must be aware of and understand all the implications of changing your username. Specifically:
    • Your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited, and in all log entries.
    • Your user pages, account preferences, and edits will be moved to the new name. Please do not create a new account or attempt to move them yourself.
    • Links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be created pointing to your new userpage.
    • Understand that using your real name as your username may put you at risk of harassment.
  2. Read the username policy and ensure your new name does not violate it. Usernames must not:
  3. Check that your new username is not already in use by searching for it on Special:CentralAuth. If the name is registered, even on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
If the target name hasn't made any edits to any Wikimedia project, you may request usurpation at meta:Steward requests/Username changes.
  4. Log in with your current username. Requests will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Place your request here.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=.
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=. Requests without a valid reason will not be approved.
    • Do not change anything else.
  6. Select Publish changes.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any inquiries regarding your request. Consider watching the page so you can monitor updates. Requests may be closed if there are unresolved queries.

Requests that do not follow these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

For stewards, global renamers, and clerks

Only stewards and global renamers have the authority to approve or decline requests. Requests are automatically clerked by a bot, but occasionally human intervention is required, particularly for malformed requests. If you would like to help out with clerking, please see Wikipedia:Changing username/Assistance.

Current requests

Please put new requests at the end of this section.

Please note that renaming users puts a large load on the database. Please do not request a rename unless it is necessary. If you have only a few edits, see the alternatives above.
  • Preface your request with a heading, thus: === Target username ===
  • Please make your request in the form of "Please change [current username] to [desired username]."
  • Sign your name at the end with four tildes: ~~~~
  • If your change request is granted, be sure to Move your userpage [alt-m] to your new userpage ___location (do not simply copy and paste your userpage text).

Add new requests to the bottom of the section.

Mvelinder

Please change Mvelinder2 to Mvelinder. I had registered Mvelinder awhile ago, but have since lost the password. In an attempt to retrieve it I realized that I failed to associate an email address with the account so I was unable to retrieve the password. And since I've already sent out recovery emails I'm assuming the password has been changed on the Mvelinder account, destroying all hope that I might remember it and recover the account. If there is a way to recover the account without going through the switching of usernames, that would be fine too. Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks. For security reasons, we can't fulfil your request. =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:02, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand where you're coming from security wise. Could you please check to see if there is any email address associated with the user:Mvelinder account so that I might be able to retrieve the password if I know what account it was sent to? Also, due to the very few edits, it's not exactly like I'm trying to steal someones reputation here. I had made the first account before I had really started editing a lot so it sat idle. Now that I've become a bit more active I'd like to have it associated with my name again. There is also a personal "neatness" factor having everything under one alias that is turning into a real splinter in my brain. Other than that, I'm not sure how there are any other ways to confirm that I really am the person from the first account and that I would just like it back because of a simple mistake I made. Any thoughts any of you have about this would be really helpful if it could help me prove who I am. Private communications would be welcome too. Mvelinder2 20:19, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please change Russcannon to N3RUS. I am requesting this so as to adopt the callsign of my US Amateur Radio license. If possible, I would like my few edits to migrate to the new account. If there is a more appropriate method of doing this, then just let me know. Thank you very much. RussCannon 13:47, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Robeykr

Please change user:Robeykr to user:Jason Palpatine. I am requesting this so as to adopt the signature I am now currently using on the talk pages. When I first came into the comunity over a year ago, I created the account using the logo I use for my emails. With the release of Revenge of the Sith, I began using my Star Wars role playing game name to sign talk pages. I would like to make it official, If possible, I would like my edits to migrate to the new account. Thank you very much.

Are you aware that many people prefer not to use/change their real names in wikipedia for fear of harrasement, stalking? =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:58, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
An additional point for my request. Thank you. Jason Palpatine 19:44, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, now I'm confused too...You still want the change (presumably indicating that Jasonn Palpatine isn't your real name)? Essjay (TalkConnect) 22:43, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Are you seriously saying you belive Palpatine to be my actual surname? ROTFLOL No, I adopted Jason Palpatine as an online alias in Star Wars role playing. The last name should have been a giveaway. Palpatine is the cheif villan in the Star Wars hexology. My character is his nephew and a jedi. -- Jason Palpatine 00:58, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am helping out a new user who mistakenly created two accounts and has edits under both. S/he would like to keep User:Angel Thane, and if possible, to merge the contributions of User:AngelThane before it's deleted. Thank you. - CrazyRussian talk/contribs/email 23:31, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page confirms s/his request - CrazyRussian talk/contribs/email 01:01, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We can't merge accounts, we can only rename them: That is, we cannot take two accounts and merge the contribution lists, we can only take one account and reattribute it's edits and system preferences to a new, unused name. Essjay (TalkConnect) 19:41, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gary King

Please change my username from User:GaryKing to User:Gary King. When I registered, I never knew spaces were allowed. --Gary King 05:04, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rajivpant to Rajiv.Pant

Please change my username from User:Rajivpant to User:Rajiv.Pant and transfer all contibutions to my new ID. Basically, I'd like to insert a period "." between my first and last names and capitalize the first letter of my last name. Thank you. Rajivpant 17:05, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You've only made 4 edits. Why not just create another account? --Tim1988 17:18, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Done. It is, most often, easier to rename a user than to encourage them to get a new account; it tends to encourage the registration of, and temptation to use, multiple accounts. While the use of multiple accounts isn't prohibited in most cases, it is discouraged, and it's best we don't foster it in this manner. Essjay (TalkConnect) 20:05, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please change 850823 to 328058. Transfer all contributions, delete and block old user account. Thank you.

No. Renames are not a way to escape from vandalism warnings. Essjay (TalkConnect) 20:01, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What? There was no vandalism. Any warning would have related to the IP address used by a prior individual.
