The Perfect Matrimony, first published as The Door to Enter Into Initiation in 1950, is the first of approximately seventy books written by Samael Aun Weor.
It describes the esoteric teachings of Alchemy, Tantrism, Kabbalah, the mysteries of the Mayas, Aztecs, Egyptians, Tibetans, Eleusians, Essenes, and hundreds more. The sexual aspect of religion is stressed in every religion it covers, bluntly stating that “the topic of this book is exclusively Sexual Magic.”
Sexual Magic is explained as the synthesis of all religion. From the introduction of the 1960 edition:
- Sexual magic is practiced in esoteric Christianity. Sexual magic is practiced in Zen Buddhism. Sexual magic is practiced amongst the Initiated Yogis. Sexual magic is practiced amongst the Mohammedan Sufis. Sexual magic was practiced in the Initiatic Colleges of Troy, Egypt, Rome, Carthage, Eleusis. Sexual magic was practiced by the mysterious Maya, Aztec, Inca, Druids, etc.
The author presents an extremely wide selection of religion and mystery schools from unorthordox viewpoints, highlighting data traditionally thought to be unimportant, or otherwise understood in a totally different manner. The result is a radically different view of life, religion and sexuality, namely that upright sexuality is the cornerstone upon which all authentic religion, yoga and occultism is based.
In contrast to popular books on “tantra” today, The Perfect Matrimony is not a discourse on achieving pleasure, but rather how to transform the sexual energy into its superior aspects. It states that there are three types of Sexual Magic, or Tantra: Black, Gray, and White. Black Tantra involves the ejaculation of semen, and Grey Tantra sometimes concludes with orgasm or ejaculation, while White Tantra always opposes any loss of sexual energy whatsoever, in other words, without orgasm or ejaculation. It exclusively advocates White Tantra as the path to achieve “self realization” and “awaken the consciousness.”
Sexual magic is explained to be the same as Maithuna, Sexual Yoga, or Tantric Hatha Yoga, or simply Tantra.
Historical Precedent
Released in 1950, the climate of the times must be considered, as it is very difficult to understand just how radical the message of The Perfect Matrimony’s message was at the time of its first publishing. Today it is normal for books to be published concerning sex, however at the time The Perfect Matrimony was revolutionary – or pornographic – depending upon the temperament of the reader.
In 1950 Tantra was extremely esoteric knowledge. However this work speaks of the sexual mysteries in outstanding authority and with philosophical agreement with authentic tantric doctrine.
Samael Aun Weor stated in his other works that he was the first man to openly teach the “Great Arcanum” (Sexual Magic) to the general public without being silenced or killed. This appears to be true, at least in the extent of being the first one to publicly teach Sexual Magic. Sexual Magic was taught in such occult circles as Fraternitas Rosicruciana Antiqua and the Golden Dawn but never publicly. Techniques such as Karezza were published earlier, but without the religious implications, and promoted mostly as a form of birth control.
The Perfect Matrimony also states that Jesus was married and practiced sexual yoga with his wife. This concept is only now being even considered in popular culture.
