E.R. Medici in prima linea (titolo originale "ER") è una celebre serie televisiva drammatica creata nel 1994 dallo scrittore Michael Crichton e prodotta dalla Warner Bros. e dalla Amblin Television per la rete televisiva americana NBC, ambientata in un pronto soccorso (ER è acronimo di Emergency Room, pronto soccorso) di un ospedale universitario di Chicago, il County General Hospital.

L'inizio della serie è stato ispirato dai racconti Casi di emergenza (Five Patients) di Michael Crichton ed è stata coprodotta da Steven Spielberg. Un episodio è stato diretto dal regista Quentin Tarantino ("Maternità" - 2^ stagione).

In Italia la sua programmazione è iniziata l'11 gennaio 1996, grazie a Rai Due, che tuttora trasmette i nuovi episodi in prima serata. Le repliche dei vari episodi di ER vanno invece in onda sul canale satellitare Fox Life, visibile sulla piattaforma SKY.

La serie è ininterrottamente prodotta dal 1994, suddivisa in rispettive stagioni. Oltre alla diffusione televisiva, sono stati commercializzati diversi cofanetti in DVD.

La Stagione 12 ha preso il via in Italia lunedì 1 gennaio 2007 alle ore 21.05 su Rai Due.

Curiosità

  • ER viene girato negli studi della Warner Bros. a Burbank, vicino Los Angeles. Il pronto soccorso è stato ricostruito all'interno di un apposito studio, mentre l'ingresso ambulanze è un set separato e ricostruito all'interno degli stessi studi californiani. Alcuni esterni, invece, vengono girati a Chicago.
  • Le scene ambientate in Congo (stagioni 9-10) sono state girate alle Hawaii.
  • ER è ambientato nell'ospedale fittizio County General Hospital, ispirato all'esistente Cook County General Hospital, che si trova nella West Harrison Street a Chicago.
  • In un episodio di ER è apparsa la zia di George Clooney, Rosemary Clooney, che interpretava il ruolo di una paziente con problemi psichiatrici.
  • Il primo episodio della quarta stagione è stato trasmesso in diretta dalla NBC, in tutti gli USA.
  • Nel primo episodio (Pilota) della prima stagione il copione prevedeva che l'infermiera Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) dovesse lasciare la serie morendo per suicidio. Ma il grande affetto dimostrato dai telespettatori per questo personaggio, ha fatto in modo che restasse.
  • La Dr.ssa Kerry Weaver (interpretata da Laura Innes), cammina con una stampella per via di una displasia congenita dell'anca. Ha scoperto che non può chinarsi per raccogliere gli oggetti caduti: per questo motivo ha deciso di sottoporsi ad un'operazione.
  • La canzone che si sente durante la morte di Mark è Over the Rainbow (dal film Il mago di Oz) ed è cantata da Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
