Il disco

Si tratta del primo album in studio di Bieber dai tempi di Believe del 2012 e del primo pubblicato dalla Def Jam, dopo che il cantante ha sciolto il contratto firmato nel 2009 con la Island Records. Purpose vede quindi come produttore esecutivo Justin Bieber insieme ai DJ Skrillex e Diplo, a Benny Blanco e Rick Rubin.

Purpose è stato anticipato dal singolo What Do You Mean?, pubblicato il 28 agosto 2015 e che ha riscosso un grosso successo commerciale, piazzandosi primo nelle classifiche di 25 Paesi[14] e diventando il più grande successo di Bieber. A seguire sono stati i singoli Sorry e I'll Show You, pubblicati rispettivamente il 23 ottobre e il 2 novembre 2015.[15][16]
