John Garman Hertzler, conosciuto anche con gli pseudonimi di Garman Hertzler, John Hertzler, John G. Hertzler, J. G. Hertzler e John Noah Hertzler (Savannah, 18 marzo 1950[1][2][3]), è un attore, sceneggiatore, scrittore e attivista statunitense.

John Garman "J. G." Hertzler è ben conosciuto nella comunità di Star Trek per il suo ruolo in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) nella parte del Generale (e successivamente Cancelliere) Klingon Martok. Avendo lavorato in teatro, Hertzler è apparso in alcuni episodi di diverse serie televisive prima di ottenere la parte dell'Alcalde Ignacio De Soto nella serie di primi anni novanta Zorro che fu trasmessa da Family Channel. La sua partecipazione serie DS9 è iniziata interpretando un Capitano Vulcaniano nell'episodio pilota e solo successivamente come Martok nel finale della quarta stagione. Biografia

Infanzia e studi

Hertzler è nato a Savannah, Georgia. I suoi genitori erano di Port Royal, Pennsylvania,[5][1] e la sua famiglia discende da famiglie Amish di lingua tedesca.[6] Suo padre John G. Carriera artistica

Hertzler ha lavorato nell'area di Washington su progetti teatrali. Sul grande schermo ha interpretato Lucas nel film horror The Redeemer: Son of Satan (noto anche con il titolo Class Reunion Massacre), distribuito nel 1978.[14][15] Hertzler ha anche avuto un ruolo nel film ...e giustizia per tutti interpretato da Al Pacino, distribuito nel 1979.[9] Ha lavorato alla produzione di Broadway The Bacchae nel ruolo di Re Pentheus.[16][17][18] Nel 1981, si è trasferito a San Francisco si unito all'American Conservatory Theater (ACT) dove a recitato e diretto diverse rappresentazioni incluse L'incomparabile Crichton,[19] Riccardo II,[11] Il delitto perfetto,[20] e a numerose rappresentazioni Shakespeariane.[21][22] E' stato istruttore per l'ACT,[23] ed ha lavorato in altre produzioni come Medea con il Cincinnati Playhouse.[11][24] Si trasferì nel sud della California nel 1988 continuando a lavorare in teatro.[25][11]

La sua prima apparizione di rilievo sul piccolo schermo è stata nel 1990 nell'episodio "Sposa di mare" della serie Quantum Leap.[26] Il suo primo ruolo importante in una serie televisiva è stato l'Alcalde Ignacio De Soto nella serie degli anni novanta Zorro, l'antagonista che ha sostituito Ramone come Alcalde (Sindaco) di Los Angeles nella terza e quarta stagione.[9][27][28] La serie è stata girata in uno studio fuori Madrid, Spagna,[29] e distribuito su Family Channel.[11] ha anche recitato in un film per la televisione intitolato Treasure Island: The Adventure Begins nBl quale interpretava un pirata chiamato Black Dog. Treasure Island fu trasmesso per lungo tempo come promo per Treasure Island Resort & Casino di Las Vegas.[7]

Il primo lavoro di Hertzler in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine è stato nell'episodio pilota "L'emissario" nei panni del Capitano Vulcaniano della nave stellare Saratoga.[30] In un'intervista a Startrek.com, Hertzler disse di aver lavorato molto con Patrick Stewart alla Paramount Studios dove Stewart aveva avviato diversi laboratori di Shakespeare workshops. In seguito avrebbe sostenuto diversi provini per DS9, ma senza ricevere alcuna parte[31] Era alla Paramount Studios a sostenere un provino per un'altra serie, quando Ron Surma, direttore del casting di DS9, gli diede da leggere del Generale Klingon Martok. In un primo momento, Hertzler interpretò Martok un Klingon di buone maniere, ma quando gli venne chiesto di farlo arrabiare, prese una sedia e la scaraventò contro il muro. La gamba della sedia rimase brevemente bloccata e disse anche che inavvertitamente si strappò via l'unghia del pollice facendolo sanguinare, ma questo impressionò molto gli auditori che ottenne la parte.[31][9] Martok debuttò nella quarta stagione "La via del guerriero" e apparve fino al primo episodio della quinta "Inizia l'apocalisse". Il suo personaggio venne ucciso, ma Hertzler disse agli sceneggiatori che pensare di fare del Gowron un clone era "troppo facile, scontato", cosìcpiù tardi nella quinta stagione rivelarono che Martok era un impostore del Dominio, un cambiante (un mutaforma). Gli sceneggiatori allora introdussero il vero Martok come personaggio ricorrente all'inizio della quinta stagione, durante la quale Hertzler interpretò un Klingon con un solo occhio. Interpretò Martok per tre stagioni incluso il finale della serie nel quale il destino del personaggio fu lasciato aperto.[31] Hertzler descrive questo personaggio come il sogno di ogni attore per la sua fisicità e spessore. Il personaggio fu coinvolto in molti aspetti di Deep Space Nine tra cui la frequente interazione con Worf.[9][6]

Hertzler ha interpretato altri personaggi in DS9, incluso un mutaforma di nome Laas, nell'episodio "Chimera", interagendo con il personaggio principale Odo. In un'intervista a Little Review, Hertzler ha detto che preoccupato dal fatto di essere riconosciuto come Martok a dispetto del makeup e cambio di personaggio, ma alla fine andò tutto bene. Hertzler ha detto di aver avuto anche modo di lottare con l'attrice Jeri Ryan che interpretava Sette di Nove.[6] In Star Trek: Enterprise, ha interpretato un avvocato Klingon nell'episodio "Il processo" e un capitano Klingon nell'episodio "Terre di confine". Ha partecipato a convention ed eventi su Star Trek e la fantascienza.[31] Nel 2015, Hertzler si è unito al cast del cortometraggio finanziato dai fanStar Trek: Axanar nei panni del Capitano Samuel Travis della Federazione.[32][33][34][7]

Outside of the Star Trek world, Hertzler appeared in the television film Pirates of Silicon Valley where he portrayed director Ridley Scott.[35] He made guest appearances on Six Feet Under, Roswell, Charmed, and Highlander: The Series.

In 1995–96, he was involved in a national tour for the stage theatre production of Dial M for Murder, in which he portrayed Max Halliday,[36] an American writer who gets involved in a love triangle.[37][38][39]

Hertzler has been involved in voice-over for video games and audio productions. Outside some Star Trek titles, he did the voice-over for the intro sequence of 3DO's Might and Magic IX, and was the voice of Dr. Grossman in BioShock[26][31] and Deathstroke and Ares in Injustice: Gods Among Us. Hertzler narrated the audio book entitled Barsk: The Elephants' Graveyard, written by Star Trek linguist Lawrence Schoen.[40]

New York theater and teaching

During the 2005–2006 season, Hertzler played the role of Henry Drummond in productions of Inherit the Wind at Geva Theatre Center[41] and Cornell University's Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.[3][42]

In 2007, Hertzler moved to Ulysses, New York, and became a Resident Professional Teaching Associate (RPTA) in the Cornell University Department of Theatre, Film & Dance, where he has directed or performed in a number of productions through the 2010 season.[43][3][12][44] In 2009, Hertzler directed an outdoor production of A Midsummer Night's Dream for the Ithaca Shakespeare Company at the F.R. Newman Arboretum.[45][46] He also portrayed Lord Capulet in Cornell's production of Romeo and Juliet, which involved students as well as professional actors.[47]

After Cornell, Hertzler has continued to do acting and teaching in the New York area, including hosting a workshop about Shakespeare acting.[48]

Writing

Hertzler co-authored with novelist Jeffrey Lang two Star Trek novels, Left Hand of Destiny, Book 1, and Left Hand of Destiny, Book 2.[31] which were published by Simon & Schuster.[6] The novels follow Martok and Worf's adventures following Deep Space Nine as they return to Q'onos, with much of the focus on Martok's life.[6][49][50]

Hertzler has also written an original screenplay, Dancing with Sancho Panza, inspired by his time in Spain when he worked on Zorro. In June 2016, the announcement was made that the screenplay will be directed by Luis Mandoki with an anticipated release date of November 2017.[51]

Political life and activism

In 2013, Hertzler ran for a position on the Ulysses town council[52] His involvement in politics was partly because of the issue of hydraulic fracturing and concerns that the method of drilling for natural gas would destroy the Finger Lakes region.[3][12] He also wanted the region's schools to get more state aid.[3] He was elected and served on the board for a two-year term.[53][3] In 2016, he was elected to the town council board but for a four-year term extending to 2020.[54]

Hertzler and fellow actor James Cromwell were among 19 people arrested for disorderly conduct during a protest outside a Crestwood Midstream compressor station in Watkins Glen, New York on June 6, 2016. They were involved in the "We Are Seneca Lake" civil disobedience campaign against the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission green-lighting underground gas storage in Seneca Lake's salt caverns, despite public opposition.[55][56]

Teatro
