Rou Dai Kaioshin (FUNimation dub: Elder Kai) is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Dragon Ball Z and its anime only sequel Dragon Ball GT.

History

Rou Dai Kaioshin was once a young, sharp looking young man, until one day, an old witch took one of the Potara Earings that he was wearing. She put the earing on her ear and the two had fused, becoming an old, less sharp looking, duo. Some time after this fusion, Rou Dai Kaioshin had fought "a terrible bad guy. Almost as terrible as Boo!"[1] and was trapped inside the Z-Sword.

Personality

Rou Dai Kaioshin's personality is much like Master Roshi's. He has a very perverted mind and loves dirty magazines. Goku bribed him of those to find out his "menacing capacities" but says he can use his vision to see girls play beach volleyball. He then offers a date with an Earth woman {first Videl, then Bulma) and he does a Roshi-like face after Goku says she's a good kisser. His pervertedness is further illustrated in the Japanese version as Goku's offer is to let him touch Bulma's breasts.

Buu Saga

During the Buu Saga, Supreme Kai and Kibito were looking for warriors they believed would be strong enough to defeat Majin Buu. After seeing Gohan's power, they brought Gohan to the Kaioshin Kai and told him that he must pull the Z-Sword from a large stone and completely master the blade in order to defeat Buu. When Goku's time on Earth had expired, he returned to the afterlife. Goku then felt a powerful chi and decided to check it out. He found out that it was Gohan. When Goku saw him wielding the Z-Sword, he decided to test out its strength. Goku picked up a large boulder, ready to toss it at Gohan, when Supreme Kai suggested for them to use something even stronger. He generated the strongest metal in the universe called katcheen and gave it to Goku to throw. When Gohan hit the metal, the Z-Sword broke in half, releasing Rou Dai Kaioshin. Rou Dai Kaioshin told them that he could bring out Gohan's latent abilities by doing an "essential ritual". The ritual itself took five hours while the power-up took twenty. After waiting for hours, Rou Dai Kaioshin had finally unleashed Gohan's hidden potential. After Gohan lost to Super Buu, Rou Dai Kaioshin revealed the method of potara fusion to Goku and gave him the potara earrings to fuse with Gohan (though Goku would end up fusing with Vegeta, creating Vegetto). He then gives up his life so Goku can live again and return to Earth to fuse with Gohan to defeat Buu. When Kid Buu had been brought out, he went to Namek with Dende and Kibitoshin, where he and the others used the Namekian Dragon Balls to help Goku and Vegeta defeat Kid Buu.

Dragon Ball GT

In Dragon Ball GT, Rou Dai Kaioshin played a prominant part towards the middle of the Bebi Saga, by helping Goku's tail grow back to help him fight Bebi, which allows Goku to ascend and transform into Super Saiyan 4. In the Shadow Dragon Saga, he and Kibitoshin explain to the Z-Warriors how the Shadow Dragons were born from the negative energy that was stored in the Dragon Balls, after years of overusing the balls to grant wishes. As the GT series comes to a close, both he and Kibitoshin watch Goku defeat all of the Shadow Dragons and restore the natural order of the universe.
