The League of Copyeditors is a group of talented copyeditors who target the substantial backlog of articles requiring copyediting. The League edits these articles to improve style (including grammar, punctuation and diction) and formatting (including capitalization and wikification).
The following tag indicates that an article requires copyediting:
![]() | This article may require copy editing for grammar, style, cohesion, tone, or spelling. |
The League aims to improve all such articles to a standard meriting the removal of the tag.
Objectives
The League's objectives are as follows:
- Reduce the backlog to a manageable level.
- Tag articles in need of copyediting.
- Process difficult articles.
- Assure excellence by copyediting, then proofreading, each article in the backlog.
Current to-do list
1. Patrol the copyedit backlog
- Copyedit any article on the list.
- Remove the copyedit tag ({{copyedit}}).
- Post the article below in the "articles ready for final proofread" section.
2. Recruit new members so that we can better tackle the ever growing number of articles in need of copyediting.
3. Ensure accuracy by proofreading each article after it receives a copyedit from a League member (particularly when the article is lengthy or difficult).
4. Lend your expertise to the group by searching through the "articles requiring assistance from other editors" list to see if you can provide help on the current difficulty being experienced with that copyedit.
5. Optional: If you feel comfortable doing so, please add an "areas of interest/expertise" heading to your user page and list those areas. League members who need assistance editing a particular topic may refer your user page and solicit your help.
If you are in the process of copyediting an article
Please insert the following template at the top of the discussion page after you have finished copyediting an article, if you need to do so in stages, or cannot complete the copyedit.
{{WP:LoCE:In Progress}}
The template should display as follows: Wikipedia:LoCE:In Progress
If you are the proofreader of a copyedited article
Please insert the following template at the top of the discussion page after you complete an article's proofread. NOTE: You don't need to insert the month and year—the template does it "automatically."
{{WP:LoCE|{{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}}
The template should display as follows:

Articles requiring assistance from other editors
Explain the nature of the help needed; use the talk page if it can't be expressed in one sentence.
- Chinese armies in the Second Sino-Japanese War: I have almost copyedited the entire article, but the Chinese Air Force section has rather silly language I cannot be bothered amending. There is not much left to do in the article. I have already done enough work on it and I do not have much experience with military articles. Rintrah 13:26, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I have worked on this several times, but the Air Force section is defiant. Should this be made into paragraphs? Hmains 22:00, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know. Perhaps we should delete chunks of it, since it mostly consists of randoms facts. Perhaps we should group related facts together. I don't know...
- Classical liberalism This one is a political minefield and only the most steadfast editor should attempt it. Gobs of sources to check. I'll give you my soul if you help.Shawn Fitzgibbons 13:49, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- Not exactly done yet. I've cleaned up the lead and bio section. I think, however, we should have a History section.
- I've given-up on this article.SFinside 04:02, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
- Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders: Needs someone familiar with the game - also reads as a story. --Sigma 7 21:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- Ginger Snaps: It managed to pass GA nomination, but the prose was a major sticking point. I've tried copyediting it, but the tone still needs to be made more formal and encyclopedic.--Supernumerary 22:01, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
- I started with the introduction. If you are concerned there are flaws in the prose style or the tone, you can add a copyedit or inappropriate tone tag. These would draw more editors attention to it. Rintrah 09:02, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- Birote is an article which seems to be in constant development that I had been trying to keep cleaned up but my personal circumstances make it difficult for me to stay on top of this. If someone else would like to pitch in, that would be great. --JAXHERE | Talk 13:49, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- Management review: I didn't understand a great part of it. Rintrah 14:40, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- See my comments on the talk page.--JAXHERE | Talk 21:04, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- 1985 World Rally Championship season: Probably needs someone else. Rintrah 15:30, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- Dentren is a prolific new contributor whose work might benefit from an editor's touch. See Special:Contributions/Dentren if you're interested in following up on some of his contribs. Note he's not a fluent English user, but does pretty well ... be encouraging, I think WP could do well with a lot more users like him(?). --JAXHERE | Talk 03:12, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
- Event Driven Architecture: Don't get it. Rintrah 07:46, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
- Charizard: Pokémon. It was awkwardly worded, with many misplaced commas. Morgan89 00:55, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- (Moved here) Morgan89 did a good job cleaning this up. However, there are still quite a few deficiencies in prose that keep it from FA status. Gzkn 02:16, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
- I copyedited some. There is an entire section under Role in the video games part where an entire section does not show up. My noobness prevents me from being able to fix this. I think it has to do with the refs. Someone with more experience should fix that.--Randalllin 02:53, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
- It failed FAC (for the 5th time), so could be moved to regular section here. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:05, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
- Well, maybe the sixth time will be the charm, heh. Moved up. Gzkn 01:59, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

- Slayer: On a band, Currently trying to get to FA status, the thing thats stopping is that it contains choppy sentences, with no flow in places, especially the Christ illusion section. Any help will be greatly appreciated M3tal H3ad 01:06, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- I had a quick look and made a quick edit. You're right: the prose is well below FA standard. The praising tone and disjointed sentences work against the required formality. Rintrah 04:23, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- But it's worth working on the prose, because it's well-referenced and the rest of the article structure is in place, ready for FAC. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 06:39, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

- Zeil am Main History section needs help from someone fluent in German, as it looks as if it is a machine translation from the German wiki article. It's also the only "Z" article in the backlog, so it'd be neat if we could clear this one. :) Gzkn 03:16, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht: I could use some help copyediting this article. I'd like to get it to GA and eventually FA down the road. — Deckiller 22:30, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Articles in urgent need of a quick look
List articles here that need another copyeditor's opinion on only a few but important issues or to end uninformed, unnecessary disputes etc. (By instilling respect for WP policies and reference works and other reputable sources, we can exponentially reduce the amount of copyediting necessary on WP and help to drastically reduce the amount of time wasted on WP in unnecessary disputes.)
- Whittaker Chambers - an editor has assumed ownership of this article and reverts attempts to copyedit it. Problems include missing commas, use of contractions, placing 'of' between month and year (ie. January of 1944), and finally removing the 'copyedit' tag I added to the article after his reversions. Thanks Hmains 05:09, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Unless you want to report him, I'm not sure there's much we can do. He's been blocked for violating 3RR before...
I've tagged it again and have attempted to plead our case for copyedit on the talk page. IrisWings 07:37, 15 December 2006 (UTC)- Status? Is it still in need of a copy-edit? Gzkn 02:47, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Articles ready for final proofread
1. Select any article that you did not copyedit and is either: a) of interest to you; or b) near or at the top of the "Ready for Proofread" section (i.e., the oldest edits). Edit as necessary.
2. Remove the copyedit template, if it hasn't been removed already (this will take the article off of the "Articles Needing Copyedit" backlog).
3. Put "proofread complete" and note what changed (e.g., punc.; grammar) in the edit summary.
4. Add the League template ( {{WP:LoCE|{{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}} ) at the top of the discussion page. Note: you don't have to enter the month and year.
5. Come back to the League page and move the article listing to bottom of the "Articles Proofread" section.
6. Strike out the article title, make any appropriate notes, and sign the entry with four tildes (~~~~).
- Landau quantization: It probably helps to have some background in mathematics. Rintrah 16:09, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame II - I haven't seen this movie, so anyone who has may be able to correct some of the hidden notes I left within the text (and also may want to fix anything my edits may have ambiguated). IrisWings 21:36, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

- Sledging (cricket): Rintrah and I worked on this one. It might be helpful for someone familiar with cricket to do the proofread, to ensure that I didn't mangle any game terminology. Galena11 17:00, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- I made a few touch ups. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the terminology. (I come from a country where cricket is popular, although I don't watch the game much). Thanks for doing what I was too tired and unwell to do. Rintrah 07:56, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

- The Lottie Project I removed the wikify tag and the copy edit tag because it's as close to done as I can manage without reading the book. A thorough nitpick would be welcome especially from someone familiar with novel infoboxes (I followed the instructions but the resulting infobox is mildly aesthetically displeasing). Ikezawa Natsuki: I went over this quickly and gave up when I got hungry. It is nearly finished, I think. Now; I am going to get something to eat. Gzkn 13:51, 1 January 2007 (UTC)History of LinuxDone. I think some questions about the article remain, including a need for better referencing. For example, the quote at the end of the "The name Linux" section has no reference, though I assume it's from Torvalds's book. —beverson 22:13, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
