"You know, Lady Francis, there's not enough kindness in the world." Round Midnight

Gorsy valley near my cottage

I like forming an image, however vague, of the people I edit with, and so these jottings are for anyone who feels a similar curiosity.

I have an MA in Modern History (in practice, medieval—thanks to the legendary Viv Green), for what it's worth hereabouts. If you want to know anything about trade agreements between England and Burgundy in Henry V's reign, I'm your man (OK, don't all crowd round at once).

Main interests:

  • History, particularly medieval.
  • Renaissance and landscape art.
  • English language and usage.
  • Classical mythology.

Tastes:

Music: At the moment I'm listening a lot to La Nativité du Seigneur, by Olivier Messiaen. I've also discovered The Debt Collection by Shortwave Set (no Wikipedia article yet), which I'm now addicted to. If I want to work faster on Wikipedia (I'm painfully slow and may take all evening researching one phrase), I blast Clifford Brown through my lugholes.

Literature: My favourite author is Anton Chekhov—wise, kind, and slightly frightening: I think I've read all his stories published in Engllish, which is hundreds.

My other two idols are Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter.

Poetry: John Clare, Gary Snyder, Keith Douglas.

Art: Antonio Pisanello (ooh, those medals!), Paolo Uccello, Paul Cézanne, Egon Schiele, John Sell Cotman, Samuel Palmer (I hope to do something about the articles of those last three, one day).

Flowers: Like Chekhov, I'm a nature nut. I love the gorse flower, with its coconut scent, and even the bindweed flower. In the garden, I'm excited now because the snowdrops are coming out. It's been a mild winter, and my Cornish tree mallow is still flowering, bless its heart. My stinking hellebore is looking very pleased with itself, in January.

Trees: My favourite tree is the hawthorn, the may tree, which grows gamely here on Bodmin Moor, writhing away from the gales, making snow-blossom in April.

Animals: Toads. I blinking love toads.

Dislikes: Television, UHT "milk", squirrels (keep yer mitts off my crocuses), thongs, teacups with small handles, drag lifts (sex life's never been the same since), pot pourri (dead leaves in an ashtray, why?), asbestos (killed my dad), hamsters, Nivea, and slugs.

My favourite painting:

Seascape study with rain cloud John Constable, c.1824
