Barney invites his gay, black brother James (Wayne Brady) to "liven" up the gang's life as all of them have been 'coupled' off and Barney is alone. James is an exact duplicate of Barney- except gay. It is soon revealed, however, that James is going to get married to his partner Tom, something Barney does not approve of because he does not like marriage as a whole yet he finds out he will be an uncle (they are adopting), something that profoundly affects Barney.
