Sanderson joined the Navy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and by 22 June 1865, he was serving as a landsman aboard the USS Wyandank. On that day, his ship was involved in an engagement on Mattox Creek in Virginia, and it was for his actions during the engagement that he was awarded the Medal of Honor three months later, on 22 June 1865.

Landsman Sanderson's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

Served on board the U.S.S. Wyandank during a boat expedition up Mattox Creek, 17 March 1865. Participating with a boat crew in the clearing of Mattox Creek, L/man Anderson carried out his duties courageously in the face of a devastating fire which cut away half the oars, pierced the launch in many places and cut the barrel off a musket being fired at the enemy.
