Edgar Broughton Band

Career

Songs such as "Out Demons Out" and appearances at "free concerts" made them a popular band on the radical fringe. They are sometimes thought of as "punk before it was punk". They were managed by Blackhill Enterprises.

Their first music was "Death of an Electric Citizen" (June 1969). "Out Demons Out" was an adaptation of The Fugs' song "Exorcising The Demons Out Of The Pentagon". Their single "Apache Dropout", combined The Shadows' "Apache" with Captain Beefheart's "Drop Out Boogie" and was played (to astonished and puzzled reactions) on David Jacobs', Juke Box Jury, television programme.

Their political views were rather anarchist and anti-establishment. Edgar Broughton said their aim was "subverting what's above". They played outside the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 as a protest against the overpricing of the gig. In a song called "Up Yours" they declared "they would neither vote left, right or centre but drop out instead".

Following a lengthy hiatus, the band returned to live action in 2006, after the re-issue of their back catalogue had stimulated new interest in their work. The band have now reformed; they have recently had a mini tour of England and are now touring Germany. The band have recently announced a new European tour in 2007.
