Kate Esther Calvert, nota anche con lo pseudonimo di Kate Tempest (Westminster, 22 dicembre 1985), è una rapper, poetessa, compositrice, scrittrice, drammaturga e spoken word performer britannica.

Nel 2013 vinse un Ted Hughes Award per il suo album in studio Brand New Ancients[1] e fu nominata Poetessa della Nuova Generazione dalla Poetry Book Society,[2] un riconoscimento assegnato una volta ogni decade. I suoi dischi Everybody Down[1] e Let Them Eat Chaos furono minati per il Mercury Music Prize.[3] Il secondo venne anche accompagnato da una raccolta poetica (omonima), a sua volta nominata per il Costa Book of the Year nella categoria "Poesia".[4] Il suo romanzo d'esordio The Bricks That Built the Houses fu un bestseller del Sunday Times e vinse un Books Are My Bag Readers per il Miglior Autore Esordiente. Kate Tempest fu anche nominata come miglior artista solista femminile internazionale ai Brit Awards 2018.[5]

Kate Tempest nacque a Westminster, quartiere della città di Londra[6], e crebbe a Brockley, South East London. Prima di cinque figli, lavorò presso un negozio di dischi dai quattordici ai diciott'anni. Provò a frequentare la Thomas Tallis School, ma la lasciò a sedici anni per iscriversi alla BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology di Croydon. Si laureò in letteratura inglese al Goldsmiths College.[1][3] Tempest Incominciò a performare sempre da sedicenne, frequentando le serate open mic presso il Deal Real, un piccolo negozio di hip-hop in Carnaby Street, nel West End. Andò a supporto di artisti quali John Cooper Clarke, Billy Bragg e Benjamin Zephaniah e a suonare in tutto lo Stato con la sua band Sound of Rum fino al 2012, anno dello scioglimento. Successivamente le fu commissionata la scrittura di un'opera teatrale, Wasted.[7]

Nel 2013, pubblicò la sua prima raccolta poetica Everything Speaks in its Own Way, pubblicata in tiratura limitata tramite la sua casa editrice, Zingaro. A 26 anni, scrisse la sua pièce teatrale di spoken word Brand New Ancients, che eseguì al Battersea Arts Centre (2012), ricevendo acclamazione universale da parte della critica.[4][5][7][8] e diversi riconoscimenti, come un Herald Angel e un The Ted Hughes Prize. Tempest fu influenzata da Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, W B Yeats, William Blake, W H Auden ed i Wu-Tang Clan per scriverla.[5][7][9]

Nel settembre dello stesso anno, il suo dramma Hopelessly Devoted venne allesisto dalla compagnia teatrale Paines Plough e debuttò al Birmingham Repertory Theatre.[10]

Nel 2014 Kate Tempest pubblicò il suo primo album Everybody Down (Big Dada, Ninja Tune), prodotto da Dan Carey, ricevendo una candidatura al Mercury Prize.[11]

In seguito, decise di focalizzarsi sulla sua carriera da musicista,[12] performando in festival e spettacoli da headliner con la sua band dal vivo composta da Kwake Bass alla batteria[13], Dan Carey ai sintetizzatori e Hinako Omori alle tastiere.[14]

Ad ottobre, uscì per la Picador la sua prima raccolta di poesia, Hold Your Own. Fu un successo commerciale e di critica e la sua uscita coincise con alla nomina dell'autrice di "Next Generation Poet". Venne anche edita in Italia, con il titolo Resta te stessa, nel 2018 ad opera della casa editrice E/O.

Nel 2015 venne eletta Seguace della Royal Society of Literature.[15]

Nell'aprile 2016, pubblicò il suo primo romanzo, The Bricks That Built The Houses, attraverso la Bloomsbury. Esso fu un Sunday Times Bestseller e vinse un Books Are My Bag come Miglior Autrice Esordiente.[8]

A settembre fu annunciato che la Tempest avrebbe curato il Brighton Festival del 2017. Uscì Let Them Eat Chaos il 7 ottobre.[16] Debuttò al no. 28 della UK Albums Chart, venendo successivamente ri-edito in formato cartaceo (sempre da Picador)[17] e nuovamente nominato al Mercury Prize.[18] Kate Tempest fu anche candidata come miglior artista solista femminile britannica ai Brit Awards 2018.[5]
