In sufficiently-large atoms, filled d-orbitals are low enough in energy to participate in bonding. A delta bond is to a pair of parallel d orbitals a a pi bonds is to parallel p orbitals.

It is possible to excite electrons in acetylene from lower-energy nonbonding orbitals to bonding delta bonds, briefly creating a carbon-carbon quadruple bond and hydrogen gas.
