L'album rappresentò il primo vero grande successo commerciale dei Metallica. Raggiunse la top 10 delle classifiche e fu certificato disco di platino in poche settimane.[13] Sin dalla sua pubblicazione, l'album ha venduto oltre otto milioni di copie aiutando il gruppo a passare da band famosa nel circuito underground a star di livello mondiale.[13] Per il terzo singolo One fu realizzato il primo videoclip della carriera dei Metallica.[14]

Descrizione

Rispetto alle precedenti pubblicazioni del gruppo, l'album è caratterizzato da sofisticati arrangiamenti, grazie ai quali è stato spesso considerato come un precursore del nascente genere del progressive metal.[15] Si tratta inoltre del primo album in studio registrato insieme al bassista Jason Newsted (dopo la morte di Cliff Burton avvenuta nel 1986) nonché l'ultimo coprodotto insieme a Flemming Rasmussen. Tuttavia, un'altra caratteristica per cui il disco viene ricordato è proprio per la difficoltà nel riuscire ad ascoltare il basso, registrato ad un volume praticamente inudibile. A tal proposito, lo stesso Newsted commentò:[16]

«...And Justice for All non era qualcosa che sentivo realmente dentro di me, perché il basso non si sente per niente.»

Il 2 novembre 2018 l'album è stato ripubblicato in edizione rimasterizzata e accompagnato da un'edizione deluxe e da un'edizione box set, comprensiva di demo e live, tra cui il concerto tenuto a Seattle nel 1989 originariamente presente in formato video nell'album dal vivo Live Shit: Binge & Purge.[17]

Le canzoni

L'album si apre con Blackened, composta da James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich e da Jason Newsted. Si tratta della prima (nonché una delle poche) canzone scritta assieme al nuovo bassista. Il testo si riferisce alla distruzione della Terra, della razza umana e di una nuova era glaciale, a causa della guerra nucleare. La seconda traccia, ovvero la title track, è una delle più lunghe del disco e parla della giustizia come valore dimenticato dall'uomo e dal sistema. Eye of the Beholder parla della mancanza di libertà di espressione. La traccia successiva, One, parla della disperazione di un uomo che, dopo aver perso braccia e gambe in guerra, è collegato a dei macchinari per vivere e non può né parlare né muoversi ("Trapped in myself, body my holding cell"). Questa storia trae spunto da un film del 1971 intitolato E Johnny prese il fucile, tratto dall'omonimo romanzo antimilitarista scritto nel 1938 da Dalton Trumbo, a sua volta ispirato da un fatto realmente accaduto. Si passa a The Shortest Straw, brano ispirato alla storia di Julius ed Ethel Rosenberg, i due coniugi condannati a morte per cospirazione. Harvester of Sorrow è un brano che presenta molti significati (alcuni pensano che parli di un uomo ubriaco e drogato che tormenta i suoi famigliari prima di ucciderli mentre alcuni pensano che sia incentrata sul difficile rapporto tra James Hetfield e suo padre). Seguono poi To Live Is to Die, brano strumentale dedicato alla memoria di Cliff Burton (l'ultimo composto dal bassista), scomparso in un tragico incidente nel 1986, e Dyers Eve, la quale narra dell'infanzia di Hetfield e del suo rapporto con i genitori.

Utilizzo dei brani nei media

One è presente nel videogioco Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (uscito nel 2007) e in Guitar Hero: Metallica (uscito nel 2009). Nella versione per Wii e per Xbox 360 sono stati aggiunti anche i brani The Shortest Straw e Dyers Eve.
