Greece, host country of the 2004 Summer Olympics, is represented by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (abbreviated HOC). 441 athletes, 223 men and 218 women, consist the biggest Greek Olympic delegation ever since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in 1896. At those games, 240 Greek athletes competed, most notably Spiridon Louis who won the marathon.
