Peter Gutteridge (19 maggio 1961 – 15 settembre 2014) è stato un musicista neozelandese noto come uno dei pioniere del "Dunedin sound" e membro dei The Clean e dei The Chills[1].[2][3]

Biografia

Fu uno dei membri fondatori dei The Clean nel 1978,[4][5] insieme a Hamish e David Kilgour, che Gutteridge aveva conosciuto quando era studente,[6] gruppo che divenne uno dei principali e più influenti del Dunedin sound.[7][8][5][9] Fu anche membro fondatore dei The Chills nel 1980,[10][9] rimanendo però con la band solo per pochi mesi[11] in quanto trovava l'ambiente "troppo controllato".[12]

Nel 1982-83 è stato membro dei The Cartilage Family, insieme a Shayne Carter,[13] con i quali fece due concerti.[14] Dopo aver lasciato la band, si riunì con i fratelli Kilgour dei Clean per formare nel 1983 una nuova band, The Great Unwashed, alla quale contribuì con quattro canzoni che aveva scritto per The Cartilage Family. Successivamente la band si esibì al John Peel Show.[15] Formò successivamente la band Snapper, con la quale si esibì dal 1986.[16] Altre band in cui è stato coinvolto Gutteridge furono gli Alpaca Brothers e The Puddle.

Pubblicò nel 1989 con la Xpressway Records un album solista, Pure.[17]

Morì nel 2014, ad Auckland, in Nuova Zelanda.

Influenza culturale

  • La rivista SPIN ha osservato che "la rilassata scioltezza di gruppi come Yo La Tengo, Ducktails, Beach Fossils e Twerps è in debito con il suono che Gutteridge ha contribuito a creare".[1]
  • il gruppo americano Yo La Tengo ha realizzato una cover di "Gentle Hour" e i Wooden Shjips hanno spesso suonato il brano "Buddy" in concerto.[12]
