Template:Big Brother Brazil sidebar Big Brother Brasil (or BBB) is the Brazilian version of the reality show Big Brother and is broadcast over Rede Globo (TV Globo). It first aired on January 29, 2002, as Big Brother Brasil 1. The show's host is journalist Pedro Bial.
It is currently in its seventh installment (Big Brother Brasil 7). Rede Globo's website, Globo.com, and a Globo-owned pay-per-view channel offer round-the-clock coverage. Season 5 was the most popular season.
Rules
The R$ 1 million prize (about 500,000 USD), is disputed by 16 contestants (8 boys and 8 girls) who are completely isolated from the world and have all their steps followed by cameras in a round-the-clock coverage. In this 7th edition, they'll be facing 78 days of Big Brother (finishing at March 27, 2007). During this time, the housemates can't watch TV, listen to radio, make phone calls, send mail (letters or e-mail) or read magazines/newspapers. Housemates are only allowed to make contact with the host Pedro Bial by the television installed on the living room. They can be visited by some guests as TV hosts and some artists (like the canadian band Simple Plan and Fatboy Slim).
The House
The house is located inside Projac, Globo's production center, in Rio de Janeiro. The house is considered by most Big Brother Specialists as the biggest and most extravagant house of all Big Brothers. The external area of the house has 700 square meters (m²) and the internal areas are about 200m². It has 4 bedrooms (3 for the normal contestants and one for the Leader), a living room, one bathroom, a big garden, one kitchen, a gym, a jacuzzi, a pool, and a special room called Confessionário (Confessionary).
Prizes
Aside the main prize, the second and third places are also awarded. Other prizes (as brand new cars, computers and printers, refrigerators, televisions and even money) can be given as the housemates accomplish some tasks.
Estalecas (Z$) and Groceries
The Estaleca (Z$) is the house currency and it was introduced at Big Brother Brasil 5. Each contestant has it own credit card with an amount of "Estalecas", that allows them to buy things for the house, like food, or personal items (rent a hair dryer, a barbecue or other pleasures they are commonly denied inside and outside the house, such as hang-gliding, bungee-jump or a helicopter ride). The winners of the Estalecas' task win also the right to do all the shopping. They can choose what the others housemates are going to eat in the following week. As in the real stock market, the Estalecas can suffer some speculative attacks and it can make the value of the groceries rise or lower.
Leader and Angel
The Leader (Líder) is the contestant (sometimes contestants) that cannot be eliminated that week and must pick one other contestant to face the elimination match (commonly named Paredão, or Brick Wall in English). The housemate achieve this function by winning the Leader task, that can be a luck task (their luck will define the Leader), a normal task (the winner of a task is the Leader) or a endurance task (when all the housemates are submitted to a stressful situation and the last man to stand is the Leader). The Angel (Anjo) is a housemate that can protect any other housemate from being voted, but he (or she) can't protect himself. Another selected house mate is given the power to nullify this action (this rule was only recently added to the 2007 edition), if they choose to nullify, the Angel is worthless.
Eliminations
- On Sunday nights, Angel and Leader contestants, respectively appoint one participant to be preserved and another to be added to Paredão. Then, each one of the remaining contestants go into the Confessionary (Confessionário), and vote on the other contestant they with to face an elimination match. After that, the highest voted contestant is sent to the elimination match and an audience poll starts (either by phone, SMS or Internet) to pick which of the two contestants shall be eliminated.
- On Tuesdays (except in the case of the final), the poll result is shown and the highest voted contestant is eliminated.
- It is also common that the Leader of the week of Carnaval is allowed to go to the Desfiles of Escolas de Samba with another contestant of their choice.

Big Brother 1
The first season started airing on January 29, 2002. It was hosted by Pedro Bial and Marisa Orth who later quit and did not host the second season. The show lasted 64 days and ended on April 2, 2002 and brought in record ratings.

Big Brother Brasil 2
The second portion or second season began one and a half month after the first season on May 14, 2002 and was hosted by Pedro Bial. The house improved a bit in order to keep the number of viewers the same as the first season. The second season ended on July 23, 2002 and lasted for 71 days.

Big Brother Brasil 3
The third season of BBB began on January 14, 2003, and caused controversy. Among the participants was the Miss Brazil 2002, Joseane. Rules of the Miss Brazil contest forbid participation of married women, and when Joseane participated, she stated she was single. Due to the overexposition in the BBB, some magazines discovered she was married since before winning the beauty contest. The marriage being proved, Joseane was stripped of her crown, and Thaisa Tomsem was crowned Miss Brazil 2002.
Also, participant Dilson, not knowing Joseane was married, tried to start a romantic relationship with her during the show. Due to her refusals, he felt unmotivated and left the show voluntairly. Participant Harry replaced him at February 26, and became the first participant not to enter the show at the first day.
The season lasted 78 days and ended on April 1, 2003.

The 5th season ran from January 10 to March 29, 2005. Changes in the Big Brother House and the function of the program were done in the sections above including "General Concepts" and "The House"
It was the most popular season and the most-watched on. The participant Grazielli Massafera became a very popular celebrity and she is participating at the main soap opera at Globo right now.

This season premiered on January 9, 2007, with some controversy. Before the beginning of the show, the announced contestant Yumi Ouchi was replaced by Flávia Viana, as Rede Globo claimed that Yumi had a contract with SBT, another brazilian television channel, although she denied that.
Another replacement happened on the premiere of the season, when Fernando Orozco was eliminated for having a friend who works as a director in the channel, which is against the rules of the show, as anyone who has any type of relationship with a Globo's employee is not allowed to be contestant in the program. He was replaced by Felipe Cobra. This was the first Big Brother Brasil to allow other contestant of other Big Brother to stay in the house (he was Pablo Espósito, from Gran Hermano Argentina 4)
The Canadian Pop-punk band Simple Plan and Fatboy Slim were guest stars.

Game
A mobile version of Big Brother was released in 2005, called My Big Brother, and reproduced the entire show, in real-time, inside mobile phones. Big Brother Brasil is also on software and is manufactured by Continuum and Brasoft Studios ([1])
