  3. ^ In 1904, the city of St. Louis would stage the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, a World's Fair. Due to fears that the Olympic Games in Chicago would compromise the fair's success, city officials pressured Chicago threatening to hold athletics competitions of their own. Chicago's committee asked the IOC to either transfer the Games to St. Louis or delay them for one year. The IOC refused to postpone the Olympics and thus approved the Games transfer.
