The Global Vipassana Foundation was established in Mumbai in 1997 to build the Global Pagoda in Mumbai, India. The Global Pagoda is the world's largest ever stone monument in history built without any supporting pillars.
The spectacular Global Pagoda is now being described by jaw-dropping, awed visitors - including the governor of Maharashtra Mr S.M. Krishna, and a senior Indian cabinet minister Mr Praful Patel - as a new wonder of the world : the Global Pagoda contains the world's largest stone dome built without any supporting pillars for the first time in human history, an unprecedented architectural marvel that is a 85-metre high structure and twice the size of the previously largest hollow stone monument in the world, the Gol Gumbaj Dome in Bijapur, India.
More crucially, this new wonder of the world serves a very important functional value as the stupendous stone dome of the Global Pagoda is also the world's largest meditation hall. The massive inner dome can seat over 8000 people enabling them to combinedly practice the non-sectarian Vipassana meditation (www.dhamma.org) as taught by Mr S.N. Goenkaji and now widely being practiced in over 100 countries, including in many prisons such as Asia's largest prison, Tihar Jail, New Delhi, India.
Worldwide, students are not charged any fee for residential Vipassana courses that last from beginners' ten-days to advanced 60-day courses.
The Global Pagoda's unique importance is further clinched as it enshrines the genuine relics of Gotama the Buddha and is the world's largest structure containing the bone relics of the Buddha.
The Global Pagoda, that will be 100 metres high when fully complete and expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, is being built combining ancient Indian and modern technology to enable it to last for atleast 2000 years (two millennia).
