It is a single game cartridge compiling Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II from the Dragon Quest series. Both of the games collected here were originally developed and published for the MSX and later ported to Nintendo Family Computer ("Famicom," the Japanese version of the Nintendo Entertainment System). The Game Boy Color remake was based on an earlier Dragon Quest I & II remake for the Super Famicom (SFC, the Japanese version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System), which was marketed exclusively in Japan, due to the closure of Enix America Corporation.
The most significant change to the games would be the addition of a Field Log, which allowed players to make a temporary save file. This gave them instant protection against losing their progress due to the loss of power in their power source.
The Super Famicom version Dragon Quest I & II was ultimately translated into English by an online fan translation group called RPG-One. It was also translated into Brazilian Portuguese by RPG-One in 2004. There are two versions of the translation patch. One version, called the DQ version, was designed to stay as close as possible to the original Japanese language script. The other version, called the DW version, utilizes a slightly modified version of the script used for the original Nintendo Entertainment System official translation.
