Elle Woods is the lead character in the American films Legally Blonde (2001) and its sequel, Legally Blonde 2 (2003). Woods will also be featured in the upcoming Broadway musical Legally Blonde. In the films she is portrayed by Reese Witherspoon and in the musical by Laura Bell Bundy.
Elle Woods begins as the stereotypical rich dumb blonde college student who is president of her sorority and madly in love with her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III. Early on the couple meet for dinner where she anticipates that Huntington will propose, when in fact he is breaking up with her because she is "too blonde". Elle is a "Marilyn", not a "Jackie". Woods learns that after college Huntington is heading to Harvard Law School and in an effort to win him back she also manages to gain entry into Harvard. At law school, she is the odd one out, both for her eye-catching pink outfits and stunning good looks. At first she struggles to fit in and become a law student, but in a character-defining moment she decides to apply herself diligently to her studies and ends up graduating with honors (and as the class-elected speaker), proving to herself and the world that nothing is impossible.
Background and family
Woods comes from a rich, somewhat materialistic but well balanced and loving family of the American dream type from Bel Air. Holding the belief that law school is for boring, serious and ugly people, She meets a friend, Paulette, when she is getting her nails done after a hard day at Harvard. She helps Paulette get the man that she wants and also get her dog back from her ex-husband.
Woods's pet dog Bruiser Woods is spoiled and treated like a human. Woods gives him highlights, jewelery, clothes to match hers and all the stuff he needs.
