Chimera Anima (キメラアニマ, Kimera Anima) are the names of monsters used in Tokyo Mew Mew.

File:Predacyte Infusor.JPG
A Para Para (A Predacyte Infusor)

"Chimera Anima" was translated as Kirema Anima in Tokyo Mew Mew,[1] and then into Chimera Anima during Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode, which lead to confusion (see below). In Mew Mew Power, they are known as Predacytes (possibly a pun on predator and parasite) and they are known as Chimeros in Mew Mew: Amiche Vincenti (Italian version).

The jellyfish-like parasites are known as Predacyte Infusors in Mew Mew Power; in the manga and the original anime, they are sometimes called Parasite Aliens,[2][3] and in the Playstation game (sometimes also in the original anime) are called Para Para.[citation needed]

Confusion of correct translation

"Chimera Anima" is one of the many translation errors found the English version of the manga, and is rather confusing due to fans constantly debating what translation is correct. The debate is usually between "Chimera Anima" versus "Chimera Animal". Due to Tokyopop translating it as "Kirema Anima" in Tokyo Mew Mew,[1] and then as "Chimera Anima" in À la Mode,[citation needed] it confused fans as to what is the correct translation is, or led fans to believe that Tokyopop mistranslated the word altogether. Tokyopop assumed that "anima" was "anima", and not "animal", but animal originates from anima, further confusing fans which is the correct translation. The correct translation is in fact Chimera Anima, but "Anima" is not used in everyday life of a native English speaker (or taught to English learners), and the alternative word being "spirit" or "soul". Because of this, fans have thought it is "animal", especially since nearly all of the anima originated from animals, and the humanoids look like animals.

At the same time though, "Chimera Anima" can be thought as a pun, as there are many puns in Tokyo Mew Mew using English words. The "Chimera" part would be referring to the animal possessed, and the "Anima" part then would be referring to the jellyfish-like parasites, but a soul is not parasitic.

History

Chimera Animas are monsters created by aliens Kish, Pie, and Tart when they use small blob-shaped jellyfish-like parasites called Para Paras to merge with an animal, a plant, and a human spirit (stolen from people by the aliens) to make them monstrous and under their control. However, the Red Data Animals' DNA prevents any attack of the jellyfish-like parasites, so they don't become host of the parasite.[citation needed] When they are defeated by Ichigo Momomiya, Mint Aizawa, Lettuce Midorikawa, Pudding Fong, and Zakuro Fujiwara, their host reverts back to normal and Masha eats the Para Para. During one of the final episodes, Kish unleashes the previous Chimera Animas up to that point upon the Mew Mews, as a diversion and an attempt to steal Masaya Aoyama's spirit. During Ichigo's battle against Deep Blue, Pie uses a Chimera Anima that is the same one that revived itself from a fossil that Ryou Shirogane's father had discovered and that is responsible for the death of his parents years ago.

In the Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode manga, the Saint Rose Crusaders take over the remaining Chimera Anima in their plans for world domination.

One was shown in the park when encountered by the Mew Mews. It can shoot stingers from its abdomen, emit blades from its wings to launch at the Mew Mews, and cross its wings to create a super-sonic attack. Mew Ichigo broke free from the super-sonic attack and defeated it. However, Tart unleashed the rest of the Chimera Cicadas, which they flew off toward the city. Tart mocked Mew Ichigo for not being able to finish her summer homework in time for school before he teleported away. The rest of the Chimera Cicadas were defeated by the other Mew Mews one by one offscreen.

Mew Pudding did battle with the first one and immobilized it with her attack. The second one battled with Mew Pudding and charged toward her until it was hit in the head with a rock that fell from the ceiling. This resulted in Tart losing control of it resulting in a cave-in that trapped Mew Pudding and Tart. When it came to the surface, it was defeated by Mew Ichigo.

File:Chimera sardines.JPG
Chimera Sardines
  • Chimera Sardines (41): To prevent the Mew Mews from getting to that device they planted to strengthen the Chimera Anima there, Pie and Tart created these Chimera Animas to hold the Mew Mews at bay. They can work together to bring down the Mew Mew and the Blue Knight. However, they were defeated by them.

Human spirit

The Aliens use their ability to extract strong spirits from any human using one of their hands. They merge the spirit with the Para Paras and these Chimera Animas are created. These types of Chimera Animas only appear in the anime. Among the Chimera Animas in this category are:

File:Chimera cheetah.JPG
Chimera Cheetah
  • Chimera Cheetah (6): The first Chimera Anima created from a human spirit. Kish stole Mary McGuire's (called Rita Rivera in Mew Mew Power) spirit to form this musical Chimera Anima during Ryou's environment-saving ball. It is armed with deadly keyboards and can move fast. • Chimera Lizard (Called Zamba in Mew Mew Power) (7, 49): After failing to steal Pudding's spirit, Kish created this Chimera Anima from a woman's spirit (which he stole earlier) to form a samba-talented lizard armed with deadly maracas. When Mew Pudding debuted, she immobilized it with her attack before Mew Ichigo defeated it.

File:Chimera kappa.JPG
Chimera Kappa
  • Chimera Kappa (8): During the time developers were building a resort on the mountains, Kish stole Aoyamada's (called Marco in Mew Mew Power) spirit to form a Chimera Anima version of a Kappa. It can lunge toward the Mew Mews, attack with its tail, and even fart. It was immobilized by Mew Pudding and defeated by Mew Ichigo.

File:Chimera black swan.JPG
Chimera Black Swan
  • Chimera Black Swan (9, 49): Before Mint's ballet recital started, Kish stole a ballerina's spirit to form a ballet-themed humanoid black swan. It can peck, shoot feathers, and has deadly dance moves. It was defeated by all four Mew Mews.

  • Chimera Cobra (called Annie Conda in Mew Mew Power, which is a pun on anaconda) (11): During an animal TV show that Zakuro was on, Kish stole a female stage hand's (called Annie in Mew Mew Power) Spirit to form this human/cobra monster. She can constrict and presumably control snakes. It was immobilized by all five Mew Mews and defeated by Mew Ichigo.

File:Chimera butterfly.JPG
Chimera Butterfly (Toxic Beauty)
  • Chimera Butterfly (called Toxic Beauty in Mew Mew Power) (14, 49): Before Keiichiro, Ryou, and the Mew Mews appeared at her house, Rei's (dubbed Chrys) lab was attacked by Pie and Tart. Her spirit was stolen by Pie who used it to merge with a jellyfish-like parasite and a butterfly specimen to form a humanoid butterfly monster. She can emit poisonous powder from her wings. After Keiichiro rescued Rei's body, the Chimera Anima lost control of itself and Mew Ichigo defeated it.

File:Chimera chicken.JPG
Chimera Chicken
  • Chimera Chicken (20): To attack Pudding while she was sick, Tart stole a teacher's spirit (called Mrs. Rosbee in Mew Mew Power) to form a humanoid chicken armed with an egg cannon. It can also spit seeds and bring out constricting worms. It had Mew Pudding on the run before Mew Ichigo, Mew Mint, and Mew Lettuce appeared. Mew Pudding immobilized it enough for Mew Ichigo to defeat it.

File:Chimera lovebirds.JPG
Chimera Lovebirds
  • Chimera Lovebirds (23): When Ichigo's friends Miwa Honjo and Moe Yamagida (named Mimi and Megan in Mew Mew Power) were in love with Keiichiro Akasaka and Ryou Shirogane, the two boys didn't have time for them and the two girls were sad. As a diversion to get to the latest Mew Aqua, Kish stole Miwa and Moe's spirits to form two humanoid lovebirds. They can display their red sacks like these types of lovebirds do. They chased after Keiichiro and Ryou until they were defeated by Mew Ichigo. Why the actual lovebirds appeared after the defeat is unknown.

File:Chimera elephant.JPG
Chimera Elephant
  • Chimera Elephant (30, 49): While trying to steal Mariko's spirit, Kish ended up stealing Shunsuke's spirit and he used it to form a very large humanoid elephant with large ears. It is powerful and can shoot water from its trunk. The Blue Knight revealed to Mew Ichigo that it wasn't very quick and she used this opportunity to defeat it.

File:Chimera Flying Dragon.JPG
Chimera Flying Dragon
  • Chimera Flying Dragon (32, 49): Mint's family was holding a tea party. When Kish couldn't get the box he thought contained Mew Aqua from Mint's "eternal rival" Saionji Kanna, Kish stole a male tea party attender's spirit to form an armored flying dragon. It can emit an aurora beam from its mouth. The Blue Knight revealed to Mew Ichigo that its mouth when opened is its weak spot. Mew Ichigo and Mew Mint combined their attacks to attack that weakspot enough for Mew Ichigo to destroy it.

File:Chimera Kangaroo.JPG
Chimera Punch
  • Chimera Punch (33): When Mew Ichigo, Mew Mint, Mew Lettuce, and Mew Zakuro appeared at the wrestling arena in Tokyo Stadium to warn the audience about danger, Kish stole a "round girl's" spirit to form a boxing-themed humanoid Kangaroo. It took out a boxer and Mew Ichigo battled it while the others stop Kish. When Tart appeared with the captive Pudding (whom was mad at Ron Yuebin using her precious photo album as a knee-rest), he ordered it to beat up Pudding. Its joey attacked Ichigo and Chimera Punch attacked only for Ron to use a technique to switch places with Pudding. With Ron's sacrifice, Pudding used martial arts on the Chimera Anima and Mew Ichigo threw its joey back at it before destroying it.

File:Chimera spider woman.JPG
Chimera Spider Woman
  • Chimera Spider Woman (34, 49): At a doll convention, Uemura Ayano's spirit was stolen by Kish to form a female humanoid spider. Its spiderwebs had the ability to manipulate dolls and it used them to trap the Mew Mews, Keiichiro, and Ryou in one big web. However, Mew Lettuce's hands were free and she used her attack to break the web as Mew Ichigo defeated the Chimera Anima.

Plant

Chimera Animas made from plants are Tart's specialty. Among the Chimera Animas in this category are:

File:Chimera Plant.jpeg
Chimera Plant
  • Chimera Plant (15): This Chimera Anima was made from some unrevealed plant that became a snail-like plant Chimera. It can use its vines to constrict. It caused havoc in the park eating everything and ran into conflict with the Mew Mews. During its battle, it accidentally ate Masha, who was trying to help the Mews. Tart used it again to throw off the trail of finding Masha. When used the third time in the dimensional lab where Masha was a prisoner in, Pie and Tart trapped the Mew Mews in an air-tight stasis field which gave this Chimera Anima the advantage where it constricted Ichigo. When Masha broke free from the dome he was held in and collided with the controls, the field turned off and Mew Ichigo defeated the Chimera Anima with her new Mew Strawbell Bell.

File:Chimera Raddishes.jpeg
Chimera Radishes
  • Chimera Radishes (17-18): As part of an aliens' "Divide and Conquer" plan, Tart created these Chimera Animas from a type of radishes. They terrorized the park and battled with Mew Lettuce and Mew Pudding before being defeated by Mew Zakuro.

File:Chimera Cactus.jpeg
Chimera Cactus
  • Chimera Cactus (33): Tart created this Chimera Anima from a cactus. Its large needles it shot out were slippery and gave Mew Pudding a disadvantage. The Cactus Chimera was defeated when Ron Yuebin appeared and used a martial arts move on it.

File:Chimera Taiboku.jpeg
Chimera Taiboku
  • Chimera Tree (44): When part of the Harajuku area was becoming a forest complete with huge insects, there was a theory that there is a tree with Mew Aqua in it somewhere. When the Mew Mews, Pie and Tart arrived, Tart created a Chimera Anima from it. It can take away oxygen, use its vines to constrict, and use its branches to attack. When one of its branch attacks was about to hit Mew Ichigo, it was blocked by the Blue Knight (who freed the other Mew Mews from the Chimera's vines) and Alto. Ryou helped the Mew Mews breathe with dragees (the type that is used for underwater activities for over an hour). However, the Mew Aqua disappeared from the Chimera concluding that it was fake. Mew Ichigo took the opportunity to destroy the Chimera. In the Japanese version of the anime, this Chimera's name is Taiboku (大木), which is Japanese for "big tree."

Other

Also, there are some rare occasions where the Chimera Anima wasn't created by the Aliens from any animal, human spirit, or plant. Among the Chimera Animas in this category are:

File:Chimera Mew Aqua.JPG
Chimera Mew Aqua
  • Chimera Mew Aqua (21, 49): Kish merged a Mew Aqua Sample with 5 Para Paras which becomes a three-headed tortoise-like monster with an eye on its back (its weak spot). Mew Ichigo and Mew Mint did a combo attack on its weak spot and Mew Lettuce and Mew Pudding combined their attacks to immobilize it. It was then destroyed by Mew Ichigo.

File:Chimera Tapir.JPG
Chimera Tapir
  • Chimera Tapir (39): While Kish was recovering from his last battle with the Blue Knight, Pie used a machine to create this humanoid Chimera Anima that can enter and control dreams with its lavendar wreath. Pie and Tart used it on Ichigo after trapping her with Tart's vines. The Chimera Anima disguised itself as Ichigo and transported the other Mew Mews into Ichigo's dream. It was a difficult battle for the other Mew Mews since the Chimera Anima had the advantage. Unfortunately, Kish appeared and woke Ichigo up. With the others freed, Ichigo transformed and destroyed the Chimera. Its abilities were most likely based off the Japanese legends about tapirs where they are believed to eat dreams.

File:Chimera FishWoman.JPG
Chimera Fish Woman
  • Chimera Fish Woman (41, 49): This woman/fish sea monster that spread pollutants in Tokyo Bay might've been created by Pie and it was also strengthened by a device he planted there. It attacked the boat that Mew Lettuce and Ryou were on while the others faced off against the Chimera Sardines. When Mew Lettuce became a mermaid from the Mew Aqua in Ryou's necklace, it was driven back by the Mew Aqua light enough for Mew Ichigo to defeat it.

File:Chimera Octoblob.JPG
Chimera "Octoblob"
  • "Octoblob" (47, 49): This was a floating blob summoned by Pie that took the shape of an Octopus. It attacks with its 3-fingered tentacles which can regenerate and become pointy. It also has a smoke-screen attack and it can shoot electricity from its eyes. Pie used it to get the Blue Knight to surrender by constricting the Mew Mews. Mew Ichigo broke free and saved the Blue Knight. It was defeated by Mew Ichigo which is when the other Mew Mews broke free.

File:ChimeraHybrid.JPG
Chimera Hybrid
  • Chimera Hybrid (51): This Chimera Anima came to life from a fossil years ago as seen in Episode 36: it was a woman-like monster with light blue skin, webbed hands, a red serpent-like tail with yellow fish fins with a long horse-like tail below its lower back, small wyvern-like feet on the serpent-like tail, flowing purple hair, black eagle-like wings, ears resembling the aliens' ears, and a bent unicorn-like horn on its forehead. Ryou's dad said it was from an ancient race of creatures called "Chimera" (meaning that it could possibly be the progenitor of the Chimera Anima) during the time when the aliens lived on Earth. It was later recreated by Pie to hold off the Mew Mews while Mew Ichigo was fighting Deep Blue on his base. It can attack with its tail. One of Deep Blue's attacks went through the wall of his base and destroyed this Chimera Anima.

List of manga Chimera Animas

  • Chimera Hawk (Volume Two, Chapter Four) - Created from a hawk on the Anime Animal Show that Zakuro was on.
  • Parasite Anima (Volume Two, Chapter Four and Volume Three, Chapter One) - A snake-like blob made from the parasites used to infect the hawk and cheetahs from earlier. After Zakuro transformed, all five Mews combined their powers and Ichigo defeated it using "Reborn Strawberry Check Surprise". They also appeared after Masaya's kendo match, when Ichigo was in a classroom. She was in her 'normal' form at the time when Masaya found her then was attacked by them. When he told Ichigo to run twice, she was hit by one, throwing her out of the room. She transformed into Mew Ichigo, defeated them using her "Reborn Strawberry Check" attack, and saved Masaya. After she changed back into her normal form outside of the classroom, where Masaya found her, she gave him a goodluck charm for the kendo finals.
  • Chimera Krill? (Volume Three, Chapter One) - A lot of them appeared while the girls were on Ryou's ship, taking a cruise around Tokyo Harbor. One of them took a small child as a hostage, so Lettuce jumped into the water. When she did, her legs turned into a tail, like a dolphin's, and she saved the baby with her attack, "Reborn Lettuce Rush". The rest of the Chirema Animas were defeated by the other Mews.
  • Dust Waiburn - A moth-like "genetically engineered Hybrid Anima" that hatched from a cocoon placed on top of Tokyo Tower. It first attacked Zakuro at a TV studio. Its wings spread poison dust. It was defeated when Mint found the Mew Aqua on top of the tower and used the Mew Aqua Rod on it.
  • Chimera Fish (Volume Four, Chapter Four and Volume Five, Chapter One) - Made from the fish at an aquarium that Ichigo and Masaya were having a date at. The Blue Knight saved Ichigo from them and she was able to defeat the.
  • Chimera Moths (Volume Five, Chapter One) - Appeared when Pudding was getting ketchup for her siblings, she defeated them quickly.
  • Zenomoglin (Volume Five, Chapter Two) - A bug-like Chimera Anima found under the Tokyo Dome. It shoots something poisonous from its mouth. The Blue Knight saved Ichigo from it and got injured in the process. Ichigo was able to defeat it, but the dome didn't stop sinking until Pudding found a Mew Aqua and used the Mew Aqua Rod. Trees started sprouting around Tokyo Dome to keep it from sinking.
  • Chimera Rabbits (Volume Five, Chapter Three) - They appear while Ichigo and Masaya are on another date. They look like rabbits that fly in a swarm like insects do. Mew Ichigo defeats them using her attack two or three times.
