Hitz Radio is a group of internet radio stations based in Ayrshire, Scotland founded by Ryan Dunlop in 2006. Dunlop's date of birth is variously given as 12 March 1991[1] and 12 March 1990.[2][3]

As of 2007 there are five internet radio stations: Hitz Radio UK, Hitz Radio Xtra, Hitz Radio London, Hitz Radio Glasgow and Hitz Radio News, together with podcasts.[4]

Dunlop claims his drivetime slot averages 80,000 listeners,[5] and that he employs 40 staff.[6] These claims are disputed by some radio industry professionals.[7][8]

Origins

Hitz Radio claims it launched "as seen today" on 16 January 2006.[9] when Dunlop was age 14,[1] but the station was operating as a hobby since December 2004 or earlier.[10]

Hitz Radio filed as a private limited company at Companies House on 2006-10-02,[11] which is wholly owned by Ryan Dunlop.[12]

Hitz Radio started broadcasting from Dunlop's bedroom PC,[6] and moved into the garden shed. It currently plans on moving to a new purpose built facility in Glasgow.[12]

Company size

Dunlop runs Hitz radio between lessons at the Prestwick Academy.[5] He employs 40 memebers of staff,[6][5] who are "volunteer presenters and commission-earning salesmen" who work from home.[5]

Audience

In common with most online radio stations, there are no independently verified figures on the audience of Hitz Radio.

In March 2007, Hitz Radio claimed 250,000 listeners, with the peak slot averaging 80,000 listeners.[5] In May 2007, Dunlop claimed Hitz Radio had "around five million people from all over the world visiting at any one time."[13]

Ryan Dunlop and Hitz Radio's claims to listener figures were researched by some radio industry professionals with an interest in internet radio[7], but have been questioned by others.[8] Some of these industry insiders wrote about the subject of Hitz Radio; such as James Cridland,[14]who was at the time of the Hitz Radio media coverage, staff of a well known national UK radio station.[15] Another to write about the subject was Kevin Coy[16] of UK online radio station Sixhits.[15]
