Mikael Stanne is one of the founder members of the Swedish melodic death metal band, Dark Tranquillity. He began playing guitar and singing backing vocals, as well as contributing some lyrics. After Fridén's departure, with the album The Gallery (1995), Stanne became the permanent lead vocalist; he stopped playing guitar, and began writing more lyrics, until with the album Haven (2000) he became the sole lyrics-writer for the band. Stanne's voice is a prime example of extreme metal vocals, and varies from the harsh sound proper of death metal to more operatic and melodic tones common in gothic metal.
