George Newlands is Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow
He is widely considered Scotland's foremost liberal theologian; his importance in United Kingdom academic theology is highlighted by his appointment as Chair of the Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies Panel of the Research Assessment Exercise for 2008.
Professor Newlands has held the Chair of Divinity at the University of Glasgow since 1986, before then he was a University Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and Dean of Trinity Hall. Sometime Dean of the Faculty of Divinity and Head of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, he is currently Principal of Trinity College, Glasgow.
He has recently written a theological biography of John and Donald Baillie (Peter Lang, 2002), and his current project is a book on Christian Transcultural Theology.
Professor Newlands teaches patristic and systematic theology, dogmatics, Christian ethics.
His research interests are in modern theology, Christology, history of Christian thought, theology and human rights.
Professor Newlands is unique in being both an ordained Minister of the Church of Scotland and a priest in the Church of England.
He is a past Convenor of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland's Panel on Doctrine. Between 1989-1993 he was a Committee Member of the Society for the Study of Theology.
On the 24th of June 2005 Professor Newlands received the higher doctorate of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from the University of Edinburgh.
