The Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry is the rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. These geographic neighbors have been extremely bitter rivals since 1918, when Harry Frazee, the Red Sox' owner, sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees resulting in the start of the Curse of the Bambino for the Red Sox. The Yankees became a dominant force in Major League Baseball, while the Red Sox did not win a World Series until 2004. The Yankees beat the Red Sox in several crucial games in those 86 years, such as two games at the end of the 1949 season to win the pennant, a one-game playoff in 1978 by a homer from Bucky Dent, and the seventh game in the 2003 American League Championship Series by Aaron Boone. However, the rivalry took a dramatic turn in the 2004 American League Championship Series, when the Red Sox came back after being down three games to none to win the remaining four, the first time any MLB team had won a seven-game series after being in that situation. The Red Sox went on to sweep the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. However, the Yankees have 26 World Championships, compared to the 6 World Series titles of the Red Sox.

This rivalry has had its fair share of brawls over the years, such as the fight at home plate between Carlton Fisk and Lou Pinella, the bench clearing brawl in the 2003 ALCS when Pedro Martinez threw Yankees Bench coach Don Zimmer to the Fenway turf, and the brawl in 2004 between Jason Varitek and Alex Rodriguez. The fan chants are a significant part of this rivalry. Some chants have included "1918", "Boston Sucks", "26-6", "Aaron Boone", "Lee Sucks", "Yankees Rule", "Who's Your Papi", "0-3," "Red Sox Choke," "2003," "Year 1978." Former Saturday Night Live cast members Jimmy Fallon and Adam Sandler are on opposite sides of the rivalry, with Jimmy rooting for the Red Sox and Adam rooting for the Yankees.
