The Hawai‘i Film Office is an agency of the state of Hawai‘i through the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. The agency facilitates in-state film projects for both small and large, both independent and commercial media productions to be released in a variety of means. Each county has a film commission affiliated with the Hawai‘i Film Office to coordinate relations between media producers and the counties within which they film — Big Island Film Office, Honolulu Film Office, Kaua‘i Film Commission and Maui Film Office. Each film commission is led by a film commissioner, appointed by respective county mayors.

The Hawai‘i Film Office is considered the first point of contact for any media producer hoping to work on film projects in any of the Hawaiian Islands. The agency provides all the documentation and permits needed to proceed with a project and also acts as a liaison with the Governor of Hawai‘i and the Hawai‘i State Legislature in consideration of tax incentives and other benefits granted for filming in Hawai‘i.
