Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Transition/Prioritization events

We came together to create the Movement Strategy recommendations. Now it’s time to figure out how to implement them. Wikimedia communities everywhere are invited to select their top priorities for implementation in 2021. Prioritization is the start of the transition to implementation. These local, regional, and thematic discussions will be hosted online by affiliates and communities with support from the Support Team.

Overview

Designed by the Transition Design Group, prioritization events are local virtual workshops to kick off implementation discussions and see what recommendations respond to different needs and can make a difference in the movement. The aim is to produce prioritized lists of actions and changes that communities and affiliates feel will make an impact, both locally and globally. Implementation will be deeply-rooted in our principles.

What you need to do

To organize a local or regional virtual prioritization workshop in September and October, let the Support Team know on Meta or by email (see the address below). Regional events would be for getting prepared and sharing information. Prioritization will be at the level of individual communities and affiliates, locally relevant and interesting, workshop style to determine your interests in implementation. Refer to this one-page overview of the prioritization events and our page on Meta as your central point for everything Strategy related.
Prepare for your meeting, find a facilitator, and translate materials if needed. Take a look at the suggested agenda. You may need to host more than one call in order to identify your areas of interest and your priorities for implementing the recommendations in 2021.
Document the meeting (video, notes), complete the reporting template and send it to us within 7 days, quite easy.

Suggested Agenda

The first call can be up to 2 hours to introduce the process and the steps ahead. This call can be organized in collaboration with other groups or at a regional level. Local prioritization workshops would take place afterwards. Organizers should take time to introduce the principles as a guiding framework for our work ahead. The recommendations are full of great ideas and should be introduced with topics that are locally relevant.

Some calls may have a few people and happen once. Others, like around popular topics, may have lots of people attend and need follow-ups. Organizers should encourage other groups and communities to host conversations of their own.

Break or Follow-up Call
Discussions	1. Think about the recommendations and the work you’re already doing. What are you working on that is aligned with Movement Strategy?	This is the main focus of the call. It provides great opportunities for small breakout group work during the call.
	2. Think about your needs and the work that you would like to be doing. Which recommendations are important for your community’s future?
	3. From the discussed recommendations, which actions and changes will make a difference and respond to your needs?
	4. To work on implementing these initiatives, what human capacity and/or financial resources do you need?
	5. In your opinion, which recommendation(s) require global coordination?

Additional Guidance for Organizers

What	Online events to decide local priorities for implementing the Movement Strategy recommendations
Objectives	Prepare people and organizations for discussing implementing the Movement Strategy recommendations. Identify local, regional and thematic priorities for implementation in 2021. Create a collaborative environment for implementation.
When	Prioritization should take place from late September to October 2020.
When	Global conversations around coordination will take place in November and December.
How	Affiliate and community organizers should adapt the suggested agenda for their context.
What is required	Facilitation so everyone can feel safe and welcomed to participate. Translation of documents and interpretation (where needed) Documentation so relevant information is captured. Reporting template completed.
Resources	Resources (e.g. data support, facilitation, translation, documentation) can be reallocated from existing funds, such as from cancelled in-person events, or newly applied for if needed. Work with the Support Team to find the best solution for you.
Who should attend	Everyone! Share the information widely and keep your community informed.
	Special focus on project communities and active online editors.
	Special focus on groups underrepresented in the Wikimedia movement - women, people of colour, indigenous communities, LGBT+ Wikimedians, and others.
Parallel participation	Think of alternatives for people that cannot attend or for those with bandwidth issues: Record the call and make the recording and the notes available shortly after Give 48 hours after each call for people to review the notes and add input
Work with others	If there is interest from other affiliates and communities, you can co-host events together for sharing information and ideas. Prioritization should still happen at the level of individual groups. Encourage communities and affiliates to host events on topics of interests and for communities or languages.
What is the outcome	Communities excited to join global discussions and be a part of implementation. Prioritized lists of initiatives that are important locally and regionally.
