Jenova is a video game character, and one of the villains in the PlayStation and computer role-playing game, Final Fantasy VII and in the upcoming film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, in flashbacks.

Her name is said to be a portmanteau of Jehova and nova, the former meaning "God" and the latter meaning "new."

In the game, many of the main characters, including Sephiroth, Cloud Strife and Zack, have been injected with Jenova cells at some point in their lives. This strange experiment makes them far stronger and more resilient to physical attacks, but an unfortunate side-effect seems be that them become mentally unstable.

The Origins of Jenova

Jenova, according to the Jenova Project reports found in the basement of the Shin-Ra mansion in Nibelheim, crash-landed on the Planet during the time of the Ancients. Jenova first appeared to the Ancients as a peaceful friend, but in time infected them with a disease capable of transforming them into monsters. The disease spread rapidly, destroying many of the Ancients and their culture. A small band of warriors managed to defeat Jenova and sealed its body away. The crater left by Jenova's landing never fully healed, and became a scar on the Planet.

Jenova was later found by Professer Gast of Shin-Ra. At first, Gast erroneously believes that Jenova was an Ancient. He took her body to the Shin-Ra Mako reactor in Nibelheim, realizing that her cells, when injected into human hosts, produced increased physical prowess and other such abilities. Hojo saw Jenova as the perfect opportunity to create super-soldiers. Believing the procedure was too risky to attempt on a full grown human, he instead injected the cells into his unborn son. This child grew up to become Sephiroth, the ultimate SOLDIER. Sephiroth was never told of his origins, but only that his mother was a woman named "Jenova."

After discovering about the Jenova Project in research books at the Shin-Ra mansion, Sephiroth went insane and tried to complete what his "mother" failed doing, scarring the planet, so that when it heals, he would be situated in the middle of the wound, absorbing the lifestream energy and then get reborn as a "god."

Jenova encounters

Jenova is seen twice before the characters actually fight her. The characters first see headless corpse of Jenova in a containment tank in the Shin-Ra building. Jenova is first revealed in full in form of a flashback: Cloud tells of Sephiroth's visit to Nibelheim. At that time, Jenova was contained in the Mako Reactor at Nibelheim.

Birth, Life and Death

The three first forms of Jenova that the characters have to fight in the game are similarly shaped.

Jenova-BIRTH is encountered in the cargo ship on the way from Junon to Costa del Sol. Jenova-LIFE is encountered in Forgotten City, and uses water-based elemental attacks. Jenova-DEATH is encountered in the Whirlwind Maze, and uses fire-based elemental attacks.

Synthesis

Jenova-SYNTHESIS, the last form is found in the depths of the Northern Crater. She looks different from the three other forms.
