A genetic marker is a specific coding of certain section of DNA of a specific species (usually a specific single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP) whose inheritance can be followed. The SNP does not have to play an active role in a gene to be followed. The genetic markers are used in the studies of populations, such as studies of the migrations of peoples.
