Smoke also known as Unit LK7T2, is a video game character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. Smoke is 5' 8".
Biography
Smoke is a tragic character in the Mortal Kombat series. He was first introduced in Mortal Kombat II as a mysterious ninja who was non-playable. Later however, he became a tortured, human soul trapped in the body of a cyborg. His most defining feature is the fact that he constantly seems to emit a smoke or vapor. This, and his power to teleport and turn invisible, formerly made him one of the Lin Kuei's top assassins.
Official debut
Smoke debuted in Mortal Kombat II as a hidden character to fight against. He was often spotted in the Living Forest stage in which he (along with Jade) peeked out of the trees. Like Reptile when he made his appearence, he was simply a grey clad version of Scorpion that emitted puffs of smoke out of his body, had Reptile's Fighting Stance and had Sub-Zero's win pose. Smoke would not have his own personality until he was featured in Mortal Kombat 3, where he was once again a hidden character, but was now a playable one this time.

Storyline
Smoke started out as a ninja assassin of the Chinese Lin Kuei clan. He was a friend and ally of the younger Sub-Zero, and had gone with him to Outworld on his mission to kill Shang Tsung. They did not accomplish their mission. When Sub-Zero and Smoke returned to the Lin Kuei, they discovered that their clan had chosen to transform their best warriors into cyborgs, already performing the procedure on Cyrax and Sektor. Smoke and Sub-Zero turned on their clan and fled. Sub-Zero managed to escape, but Smoke was captured and converted into a cybernetic warrior. Under the programming of the Lin Kuei, Smoke was forced to hunt for his old friend.
During the events of Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Smoke's fortunes continued to fail him. He was captured by Shao Kahn's warriors, after his invasion into Earthrealm. It is unknown if either Kahn, Sub-Zero or the Lin Kuei were aware that Smoke, in fact, still possessed a soul and was one of Raiden's chosen warriors. In any case, Smoke was transported to Outworld as a trophy and was locked away in the bowels of one of Kahn's fortresses. In a state of hopelessness and misery, Smoke shut himself down.
Nearly a decade later, however, he was discovered by Noob Saibot. He reactivated the cyborg, whose nanotechnology set about repairing and improving his systems. Reprogramming Smoke to obey only him, Saibot turned the cyber-ninja into both his ally and template for a future army of cyber-demons that was to rise from the Netherealm. Although he appeared to follow orders blindly from his new master, it has been hinted at that a part of his soul and good nature still remains, as evidenced by the game ending of Ashrah. It's hinted that Smoke will probably fight on the side of Earth's warriors and alongside his friend and ally, Sub-Zero in the next Mortal Kombat conflict.
Movie appearance
In the movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Smoke appears in his cyborg form to find Liu Kang and Princess Kitana. However, Smoke is stopped by Sub-Zero, who reveals that Smoke was originally after him and states nothing else of their past connections if they existed in the movie storyline.
TV appearance
In the animated series, Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, Smoke appeared in one episode, serving Shao Kahn and seeking Sub-Zero. In the end, Smoke's human soul was able to over power his programming and he stood to the vow of friendship between him and Sub-Zero.
Memorable fatalities
(As Human Smoke)
- Smoke-Plosion: In homage to Shang Tsung's fatality in Mortal Kombat II, Smoke enters his opponent's body and bashes in their inside organs before exploding and ripping their body apart.
- Tele-death: Using Scorpion's teleport move, Smoke teleport punches his opponent's head off.
(As Robot Smoke)
- Smoke Bomb- Smoke shoves an explosive bomb in his opponent's mouth in which detonates and explodes, ripping his opponent's body apart in the process.
- Time's Up!- A series of time bombs were spewed out of his stomach, which would result in Earth's destruction at their (implied) explosion.
- Smoke Death- His latest fatality involves him disappearing in thin air and repeatedly bashing in his opponent in a gruesome manner.
Trivia
- Smoke is probably one of the most well liked characters by the Mortal Kombat fanbase.
- In Mortal Kombat: Deception, his alternate costumes has his body fully composed of smoke, thus living up to his name. It sparked controversy if his alternate outfit was actually Smoke in his human form. Information provided on production art from Deception (unlockable in the Krypt) seem to support this theory (both versions of Noob-Smoke are shown, including the one with Smoke's body composed entirely of smoke, with the comment that Both Ninja Smoke and Robot Smoke have a lot of fans. It was important that both made appearances in Deception.)
- Despite being one of the popular characters in the Mortal Kombat series, he was simply a grey clad version of Scorpion that had puffs of smoke emitting from his body.
- He is the first of 3 cyborgs that managed to keep his soul after his automation (Cyrax was the second as Sonya and Jax helped him regain his soul, Sektor never retained his soul).
- He is Sub-Zero's close friend (Sub Zero VI).
- Like Reptile in Mortal Kombat, Smoke makes rare appearances on how to find him in Mortal Kombat II.
- In the arcade version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, he shared the head decapitation uppercut fatality with Ermac, a move that was originally performed by Johnny Cage. In Mortal Kombat Trilogy, this fatality was dropped and two new fatalities were given to him.
- Smoke has made two appearances in the cartoon, Robot Chicken: once, as a sparing partner to Joey, and another fighting Sub-Zero. Erronerously, Smoke was shown using fire as his main technique. His fatality against Sub-Zero was to knock his head off, push the body away, set the disambodied head on the ground, pull out a hockey stick, and smack the head off screen, paroding Mortal Kombat's needlessly long and gory fatalities, specifically the ones that relate nothing to the character preforming them.
- Due to Smoke's alternate costume in Deception, there is much anticipation that Smoke may be able to escape his robotic form and return in the next Mortal Kombat game (or in near future games) in his human form once more. However, this is also challenged as there are many fans whom like Smoke's cyborg form and how it differs in appearance compared to Cyrax and Sektor- esspecially when, as evidenced in Deception that new character models of Smoke's appearance were going to be used should he appear in the next game. His human form however, may return.
- In Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Smoke (still in his human form, because the game is set during Mortal Kombat II) challenges the player to complete 5 missions. Doing so will unlock Mortal Kombat II.
