Simple username changes

This page hosts simple requests for a username change across the Wikimedia network. Requests are processed by stewards and global renamers.

Instructions
  1. Read Wikipedia:Changing username carefully. You must be aware of and understand all the implications of changing your username. Specifically:
    • Your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited, and in all log entries.
    • Your user pages, account preferences, and edits will be moved to the new name. Please do not create a new account or attempt to move them yourself.
    • Links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be created pointing to your new userpage.
    • Understand that using your real name as your username may put you at risk of harassment.
  2. Read the username policy and ensure your new name does not violate it. Usernames must not:
  3. Check that your new username is not already in use by searching for it on Special:CentralAuth. If the name is registered, even on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
If the target name hasn't made any edits to any Wikimedia project, you may request usurpation at meta:Steward requests/Username changes.
  4. Log in with your current username. Requests will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Place your request here.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=.
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=. Requests without a valid reason will not be approved.
    • Do not change anything else.
  6. Select Publish changes.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any inquiries regarding your request. Consider watching the page so you can monitor updates. Requests may be closed if there are unresolved queries.

Requests that do not follow these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

For stewards, global renamers, and clerks

Only stewards and global renamers have the authority to approve or decline requests. Requests are automatically clerked by a bot, but occasionally human intervention is required, particularly for malformed requests. If you would like to help out with clerking, please see Wikipedia:Changing username/Assistance.

Bureaucrat note: Domain names are ok if they are personal or not promotional. Is Virtualapplesauce a commercial site? Kingturtle (talk) 15:21, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VirtualApplesauce is not a commercial site. It is a personal ___domain that just so happens to be my internet nickname...that's why I chose it. However the person that originally blocked me said that because I put a link to my website on my personal page that I was blatantly advertising. I explained that it was a test post that I thought no one would ever see, there is no content at the website to advertise and that the post would have been removed, I realize I should have used the sandbox for my test, they then removed the block but they then said that the username had to be changed because it is a ___domain name which is forbidden in the Wiki username policy. I've been battling this for over a week and am really confused as to how exactly I can get this situation resolved. I have no problem operating within the rules and wish to do so...help?VirtualApplesauce (talk) 01:12, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bureaucrat note: As someone that also shares their username with their ___domain (evula.com, evula.net, and evula.org, to be exact), I feel your pain. :) However, the issue wasn't that you added a link to your website; you effectively created a fake Wikipedia article about your website, which is something that we see far too often from those with less than innocent intentions. Given the fact that you're obviously apologetic about the event, I'm inclined to overrule any "you have to be renamed" declaration. Do you still want to be renamed?   Administrator note I'd support both outcomes, depending on the user's wishes. The admin who blocked this user on name basis insisted that he change his name, so I'll notify him of this; however, given the above discussion I'd be fine with VirtualApplesauce retaining his sauce. I appreciate everyone who has taken the time and I would prefer to keep my name as is if it is possible. Hello MoP. :)VirtualApplesauce (talk) 21:33, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
