LabChart functions like a traditional multi-channel chart recorder, X–Y plotter, polygraph and digital voltmeter. The software records up to 16 data channels and 32 analysis channels in a single file on computer hard disks. Some data sources can also be controlled using the software.

The collected data can be either presented in real-time, i.e. while it is being recorded, or it can be played back later for offline analysis. On screen, that data is presented in a manner that resembles the output of a paper chart recorder, for example as an electrocardiogram or a peristimulus time histogram. Labchart also has the capability to synchronize a video feed with acquired data.
